The HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 aren't meant to be cutting edge. Instead, they're cheap—under $600—and super-light, at just .5lbs.

It's a smart strategy, since consumer-grade 1080p camcorders, like point-and-shoot cameras, are hugely common and rarely differentiated by more than a few minor features. The three factors that really stand out to people are looks, weight and price—two of which Panasonic has taken great pains to emphasize here, even slapping a dubious and qualified "world's lightest" claim onto their marketing materials.




The SD10 and TM10 are set apart by storage options, with the TM10 carrying 8GB of internal storage alongside its SDHC slot—the only storage facility on the SD10. Otherwise, they're both more or less identical: 1080p AVCHD video recording; 2.1MP still shooting;an inbuilt Optical Image Stabilizer; a touchscreen fold-out LCD; a three second pre-record funciton; and a 1.9-second claimed startup time. And of course, on the all-important matter of price, the cameras ring up at a respectable $550 for the SD10, and $600 for the TM10, available from September. The full press release:

New HD Camcorders Weigh 0.5 LB, Packed with Easy-to-Use, Advanced Features

Secaucus, NJ (June 8, 2009) – Panasonic today announced the release of two of the world's lightest*, High Definition (HD) camcorders – the HDC-SD10, which uses an SDHC/SD Memory Card as recording media, and the Twin Memory Type HDC-TM10, which records onto both an 8GB** Built-in Memory and an SDHC/SD Memory Card. Each model weighs just 0.5 LB, yet its compact body design has a high-powered 16x optical zoom capabilities and advanced features to produce beautiful 1920 x 1080 Full-HD videos.

The 16x optical zoom of the HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 is supported by the Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) function – an essential element to achieve clear zooming, as it minimizes the hand-shake that often impairs video quality while zooming. Panasonic's Advanced OIS detects and corrects for hand-shake around 4,000 times per second and works with the high-powered optical zoom to produce clear, stable zoom shots. The new Active mode also extends the hand-shake correction range to allow the shooting of clear, crisp images while walking or moving.

As with most Panasonic camcorders, the HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 both feature the iA (Intelligent Auto)*** function, which automatically sets the most suitable Scene mode according to shooting conditions. These include Advanced O.I.S., Face Detection, which adjusts the exposure so faces are captured perfectly; Intelligent Contrast Control, which helps ensure proper contrast; and Intelligent Scene Selector, which determines the shooting conditions and automatically selects the Scene setting that will provide optimal results. Both camcorders are also equipped with AF/AE Tracking (Auto Focus/Auto Exposure Tracking), which automatically tracks a moving subject for consistently beautiful images. This feature maintains the focus and exposure even if the subject moves or turns to one side.

Other features of the HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 include:
SDHC/SD Memory Card Recording – The SDHC/SD Memory Card not only brings significant advantages to smaller and lighter camcorders, but it also differs from a hard-disk drive in that it has no transport mechanism, making it highly shock-resistant and enabling faster recording starts.
Twin Memory Recording – Relay Recording (HDC-TM10 Only) – The HDC-TM10 records Full-HD images onto the built-in memory or an SDHC/SD Memory Card (optional), and features a Relay Recording function. When the built-in memory is full, this function automatically switches the recording media to the SDHC/SD Memory Card to provide uninterrupted recording. Video data that is recorded using both media types can be merged inside the camcorder and saved to an SDHC/SD Memory Card.****
Touch Screen and Handy Function Buttons – Both models feature a touch screen that lets users operate a variety of functions by simply touching an icon displayed on the LCD. This allows intuitive operation without having to look away from the subject.
1.9-sec Quick Power-On – The power turns on and off by opening and closing the LCD. This start-up allows users to save battery power by keeping the power turned off when the camcorder is not in use, while making sure that unexpected shooting opportunities are not lost. The power-saving Eco mode***** automatically turns the power off when the camcorder is not in use for five minutes.
Pre-Rec – To avoid missing critical shooting opportunities, when the Pre-Rec function is on, the camcorder continuously records three seconds of images into an internal buffer memory. When the Record button is actually pressed, the three seconds immediately prior are added to the beginning of the clip.
Auto Power LCD – This feature automatically adjusts the brightness of the LCD screen according to the shooting conditions.
Built-in Video Light and Flash – Both the HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 are equipped with a video light and flash for convenience when shooting in dimly lit places.
Highlight Playback – This function is for users who want to view recorded images quickly, as "highlights" can be created and played back according to a set time interval.
One-Touch Copy of Videos to DVD and Easy Playback with the BN1 DVD Burner – To avoid the two-step process previously required to save Full-HD videos from an SDHC/SD Memory Card or built-in memory onto a DVD for playback, the HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 feature a one-touch function that makes this process easier.

The HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 are both compatible with Panasonic's VIERA Link to allow quick and easy viewing of Full-HD video content, as well as with the VIERA Image Viewer function on a VIERA HDTV. This allows users to play videos on a large screen by simply inserting a recorded SDHC/SD Memory Card into the SD Card slot of a Panasonic VIERA HDTV******. It provides instant playback of video clips recorded in the AVCHD format in Full-HD quality. Similarly, video recordings can be easily played by using a Panasonic Blu-ray Disc™ player.

The suggested retail prices of the HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 are $549.95 and $599.95 respectively. The TM10 will be available in black and silver models, while the SD10 in black only. All models will be available in September 2009.

<![CDATA[Denon's DBP-2010CI and DBP-1610CI Blu-ray Players: Pay More for Less]]> Denon's DBP-2010CI and DBP-1610CI Blu-ray players are made with high-end components, but at $700 and $500 respectively, they are missing perks found in much cheaper players.

They both have what pretty much every $300 Blu-ray player from Samsung, LG, Sony or Panasonic has:
• An Ethernet port for BD-Live and firmware updates
• DivX and AVCHD playback
• Bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio, requiring decoding in a separately sold receiver

They don't have Wi-Fi or any streaming video app, like Netflix or Amazon VOD. (You'd have to slum it with a cheaper LG or Sammy if you want those proletarian features.)

They both do have "superior" stereo analog outputs and Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converters for CD listening, if you're still into CDs and have really expensive speakers. Besides, the step-up DBP-2010CI also has 7.1 analog audio outputs, though not sure if the 1610 does (doubt it). That's really only necessary if you have a nice surround-sound system, but don't have the cash to upgrade your receiver when you go Blu-ray.

The 2010 also has an Anchor Bay upscaler for admittedly badass playback of DVDs, and an RS232C so that custom installers can set up remote controls for it. That's really who it's for: Custom installers who go the extra mile—and then bill you for it. Go get 'em, Denon. I'll be here content with my LGs and Samsungs. [Denon]

<![CDATA[Sony HDR-TG5V Handycam: Mini HD Camera Gets GPS]]> Sony's HDR-TG5V Handycam shoots HD and tells you where you shot it...which is bad news for cave-dwelling terrorists but nifty for family vacations.

The HDR-TG5V is the evolution of the Sony HDR-TG1, and it certainly sounds like a premium device. It features a titanium frame, LCD touch interface and shoots 1920x1080 video (10X optical zoom) along with 4MP stills (face detection included). AVCHD video is recorded to 16GB of internal storage along with GPS coordinates should you want to track your adventures.

But as CNET points out, there's no GPS metadata standard in AVCHD, so the information can only be sewn to your videos through proprietary software. That's not Sony's fault, but it does make their camcorder's main new feature a bit less appealing.

<![CDATA[Canon Vixia HF11, HG20 and HG21 Camcorders Priced For U.S., Getting Solid Early Reviews]]> Three new Canon cams including the successor to the HF10, one of last year's best AVCHD 'corders, are now officially bound for the U.S. after details hit in Japan a few weeks back. Camcorderinfo.com has already gotten their hands on an HF11 review unit, and liked what they saw—full HD capture at 1920x1080, dual flash storage options and image stabilization shipping this month for $1,200. The hard disk based HG20 and HG21 round out the new lineup.

Camcorderinfo.com is digging the HF11, but since the HF10 was released only 8 months ago, you can probably save some cash if the updated specs aren't important:

There's little difference between the Canon HF10 and Canon HF11. The big, advertised improvement in the new generation is an increased bitrate, up from 17Mbps to 24Mbps. This makes Canon the first to produce a consumer camcorder to reach the bitrate ceiling on the AVCHD codec. When we tested the camcorders, side-by-side, in the lab and out of the lab, we were hard-pressed to see much of a difference. The average shooter will not notice anything. The HF10's performance was pretty hard to top to begin with.

The second upgrade is internal memory, increasing from 16GB to 32GB of non-removable solid state capacity. This could be a value save if you don't already own a few SD/SDHC cards. If you do, you can probably save money by buying the HF10.

<![CDATA[Canon Updates HD Palmcorders With HF11, HG21 Versions]]> Canon's AVCHD HF10 camcorder got an excellent reception earlier this year, and now Canon have tweaked it slightly into the upcoming HF11 version. The most important tweaks are doubling the internal storage from 16GB to 32GB and the addition of a 24Mbps high quality MXP imaging mode. Otherwise, most features of the camera remain the same. Similar tweaks have been made to last year's HG10 HDD camera, adding in the 24Mbps shooting mode, a 120GB drive and now allowing movies to be saved onto SD card whereas before it was limited to still imagery. <![CDATA[Sony HDR-CX12 HD AVCHD Camcorder Has Face-Recognition Technology]]> Sony has upgraded its HDR-CX7 flash-based camcorder to include face-recognition technology and Smile Shutter, which automatically takes a still picture as soon as the subject switches to full beam. The camera records in full HD at a resolution of 920 by 1080 pixels, and has a 10-megapixel camera for still shots. There's image stabilization, and you control the camcorder merely by tapping the 2.7-inch LCD screen. The world's first AVCHD camcorders with a 3MOS system are newly developed by Panasonic and based on the company's 3CCD technology, an already-established and renowned system that provides excellent color reproduction. With their expanded light-receiving areas, the MOS sensors also significantly improve image quality, even in low lighting. The three MOS sensors process the red, green, and blue components of incoming light separately, so color reproduction is superb. These sensors also have about double** the light-receiving area of CCD sensors, so image quality when shooting in low light is much higher. Compared with a conventional 1MOS, Panasonic's new 3MOS system captures more vibrant, true-to-life colors, greater detail and richer gradation. This high-precision imaging element is first in the world*** to shoot in lighting as low as 2 lux and helps the SD100 and HS100 capture exceptionally clear, bright images.
Adding to the 3MOS sensor, Panasonic HD Advanced Pure Color Engine and a new Leica**** Dicomar lens — helps the SD100 and HS100 deliver the outstanding images in full-HD 1920 x 1080 recording*****. Full-HD recording, with its total of 2,070,000 pixels, provides exceptional image details and rich colors. The Leica Dicomar lens system used in camcorders comprise 12 lenses in 9 groups, including aspherical lenses to improve resolution and contrast and an LD (low-dispersion) lens to help prevent color bleeding. Panasonic's iA mode, automatically activates several convenient shooting functions at once, so the user does not have to manually change any settings. These include:
— Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) detects hand-shake and
then triggers the lens to shift to correctly align the optical axis,
helping to ensure videos are sharp and reduce blur. This happens at a rate
of 4,000 times per second.
— Face Detection automatically adjusts the exposure, contrast, skin
complexion effect, and focus so that faces are always clear. Face Detection
can detect up to 15 faces in a frame.
— Intelligent Contrast Control continually measures the ambient light
intensity and adjusts the contrast as it changes, helping to prevent a

— Intelligent Scene Selection which determines the shooting environment

Both camcorders come packaged with HD Writer 2.6 software for Windows, and also support iMovie '08 for Apple, which let users directly edit the high-quality full-HD moving pictures they capture with their camcorders. It's a significant revamp, since the new cams use a completely new CMOS sensor, replacing the previous 3-CCD system. The HD40 has a 120GB 1.8-inch hard drive, versus the slimmer HD30's 80GB (making it the world's smallest 80GB palmcorder). Both these high-end models record in AVCHD and MPEG2 at full HD resolution, and the HD40 can squeeze in about 50 hours of AVCHD at this res. New JVC HD Everio Line Includes World’s First 50-Hour AVCHD Camcorder And Dual-Format Models

Two new HD models offer both AVCHD and MPEG-2 recording

WAYNE, NJ, June 17, 2008 – JVC has added three new high definition camcorders to its HD Everio line,
including a pair of dual-format models, one of which records up to 50 hours of AVCHD Full HD video.

Two new models, the GZ-HD40 and GZ-HD30, are the world’s first
AVCHD / MPEG-2 dual-format camcorders, allowing access to the
superior long time compression afforded by AVCHD, as well as
MPEG-2’s superior editing and post-production environment. Both
offer 1920 x 1080 Full HD recording in both formats to a 120GB (GZ-
HD40) or 80GB (GZ-HD30) internal hard disk drive. The third new
model, the GZ-HD10, offers 1440 x 1080 recording in the AVCHD
format to a 40GB hard drive.

Technologies behind the scenes include new CMOS imaging chips
with interpolation technology, the HD Gigabrid Duo chip that includes codecs for AVCHD in all
camcorders and MPEG-2 in the GZ-HD40 and GZ-HD30 as well as noise reduction technology, and 1920
x 1080/60P output for all camcorders via HDMI™ (V.1.3 with x.v.Color). Ease of use innovations include
Intelligent Grouping, which sorts and groups together similar themed scenes for easier access, and
Digest Playback, which creates a video montage of scenes, much like a “coming attractions” clip, when
they’re burned to a DVD.

JVC designed the GZ-HD30 to meet the needs of a broad segment of people who shoot video, including
family users. More compact than the GZ-HD40, it offers all of the performance and nearly all of the
features of that model, except it has a slim 80GB internal hard disk for a maximum 33 hours of Full HD
recording, and does not come with a docking station. As of June 2008, it is the world’s smallest Full HD
camcorder with 1.8” HDD.

JVC provided the GZ-HD40 with a 120GB hard disk drive for up to 50 hours of AVCHD Full HD video
recording, and a docking station to meet the requirements of the prosumer or high-end enthusiast.

JVC designed the small sized HD Everio GZ-HD10 thinking of the needs of budget-conscious users, yet it
offers a high quality KONICA MINOLTA HD LENS and a 40GB hard disk that provides up to 16 hours of
high-definition recording. The GZ-HD10’s 1440x1080 AVCHD recordings are also up converted for
playback at 1920 x 1080/60P via HDMI.

All three of the new HD Everio camcorders can connect to the optionally available CU-VD50 Everio
SHARE STATION with stand alone playback. The new HD Everios can also connect to the JVC CU-VD3
SHARE STATION to offer an even more cost-efficient archiving and playback solution. The combinations
offer the world’s first PC-less solution for AVCHD and MPEG-2 burning and playback, with AVCHD DVD
discs that can be shared with commonly available AVCHD compatible Blu-Ray players.

1920 x 1080 Full HD Recording
The GZ-HD40 and GZ-HD30 both have three AVCHD recording modes that all record Full HD 1920 x
1080 video. The only difference among modes is the bit rate, and while using the highest bit rate yields
the highest quality results, the image quality is remarkable even using the lowest bit rate EP mode. And
since 1920 x 1080 is truly native HDTV resolution, it requires no conversion on the part of the display
device to show high definition images.

The GZ-HD40 and GZ-HD30 also have the FHD mode for recording Full HD 1920 x 1080 MPEG-2
Transport Stream video with MPEG-1 Layer 2 audio. The GZ-HD10 records solely in 1440 x 1080
AVCHD format.

Continuous shooting time and typical shooting time are approximate. To record video, a microSDHC card with Class 4 or higher performance is required. microSD memory cards (256MB to 2GB) and microSDHC memory cards (4GB and 8GB) have been tested for the following brands: Panasonic, Toshiba, SanDisk, ATP. New CMOS Chips with Interpolation Technology
The image sensors used in the new HD Everio line are newly developed small size but high resolution
1/3” and 1/4.5” CMOS chips. This CMOS uses proprietary interpolation technology based on what JVC
developed for its 3CCD cameras. This algorithm makes it possible to generate virtual pixel data (orange
diamond area shown in illustration below) from the red, green and blue physical pixels, thereby providing
image information that actually surpasses what’s required for 1920 x 1080 Full HD imaging, or for 1440 x 1080 imaging in the GZ-HD10.

HD Gigabrid Duo Engine
JVC’s HD Gigabrid video engine, which processes in full 1920 x 1080 progressive video, was the result of
years of experience in signal-processing technology, and uses five digital noise-reduction algorithms as
well as signal processing to improve horizontal scan resolution by approximately 20 percent over JVC’s
previous interlace technology, for an extremely clear and sharp image.

New this year with the HD Gigabrid Duo engine is its further advanced integration, adding the AVCHD
codec (GZ-HD40/30/10), and incorporating all functions of the previous HD Gigabrid engine (including
MPEG-2 codec for GZ-HD40/30), as well as the USB Host controller function for use with an Everio
SHARE STATION.

1080p 60 Frame per second Progressive Output Function
Enabling output of a 1080p 60 fps progressive signal on all three models allows recordings to be enjoyed
on high-end displays. Using the same high power Genessa technology as in JVC advanced displays,
conversion to 1920 x 1080p at 60 fps provides seamless natural video, free of motion judder during fast
action activities, jaggy lines on angles, and moiré patterns on fine detail when zooming. 1920 x 1080 HD
discs played back from CU-VD50 SHARE STATION or via the camera from CU-VD3 SHARE STATION
are also converted to 60 fps progressive.

HDMI™ (V.1.3. with x.v.Color™)
The new JVC HD Everio camcorders record using x.v.Color™ technology. The universal standard xvYCC,
known as x.v.Color, provides more accurate color reproduction with more detail and shades that look
more natural to the human eye. It can display 100 percent of the colors that the human eye is capable of
perceiving, whereas the traditional sRGB system can only display approximately 55 percent. The
difference in color reproduction performance is especially noticeable in greens and yellows. These new
HD Everio camcorders output to televisions directly using HDMI™ (V.1.3. with x.v.Color).

Extremely Quick Response, Designed for High Quality Shooting
JVC’s new HD Everio models minimize the risk of missing an important shot with faster response time for
many operations. For instance, the time lag from pressing the trigger to the start of recording is only 0.08
seconds (trigger sound set to off). That is nearly instantaneous, and a great improvement over the more
common 0.6 second delay. Likewise, the time it takes to power-on the unit has been reduced to 0.6
seconds, whereas competitive models may take over 1.5 seconds. And to play footage, it takes only 3.5
seconds to display the playback picture, which is about half the time required for other manufacturers’
products. These improvements can mean the difference between capturing a crucial shot or missing it.

In addition, JVC HD Everio camcorders include other functions that enhance convenience and quality:

Innovations in Ease of Use
JVC has equipped its new HD Everio models with new functions to enhance usability. First is the
“Intelligent Grouping” function that at the touch of a button rapidly sorts through and categorizes the
recordings stored on the camcorder’s hard disk into different groups. Up to 1,000 scenes can be grouped
in three seconds or less. With scenes categorized, users will have faster and easier access to desired
scenes, a real convenience as the hard drive fills up.

As an extension of this technology, “Digest Playback” automatically generates a video montage of just the
highlight scenes when HD Everio recordings are copied to a DVD. This digest version of the disc contents,
looking much like a coming-attractions clip, will help the viewer get a general idea of what the disc is
about, saving precious time.

PC-less Archiving Using Exclusive DVD Burners
By connecting the GZ-HD40/HD30/HD10 directly to an optional CU-VD50 or CU-VD3 HD Everio SHARE
STATION via USB, the user can burn 12cm AVCHD discs from all cameras, or MPEG-2 data discs from
the GZ-HD40 and 30 to make backups and permanent
archives of selected scenes in any desired order with
just a few simple steps.

There are several options for selecting clips to be burned
to disc — all clips, manually specified clips, clip files not
yet copied, by date, video playlists created in-camera
and comprised of multiple user-selected clips, or by
event type for those clips that have been tagged with an
icon representing an event category (e.g. birthday, baby,
graduation, vacation, etc.).

Created AVCHD discs can be played on AVCHD
compatible Blu-ray players. The CU-VD50 can also be used as an external DVD drive/burner when
connected to a PC. The CU-VD50 plays back on a TV via HDMI in 1920 x 1080 60p and with x.v.Color,
analog component and as well in standard definition video. The slim CU-VD3 offers the same burning
features, but with playback via the camcorder.

Full Complement of Interfaces
All three models are equipped with USB2.0 and HDMI digital interfaces on the camcorder. The Docking
Station supplied with the GZ-HD40 is equipped with USB2.0 and i.LINK (IEEE 1394).

USB is primarily for file saving, HDMI for digital viewing on large screen displays, and i.LINK streams high
definition video in full resolution or the 1440CBR mode. High definition video streamed by i.LINK in the
1440CBR mode is HDV-compatible and allows footage to be edited using HDV-compatible software
(functionality might be limited with some applications). HD recorded material is down-converted for output
in DV over i.LINK, or in standard definition via the analog component/ composite output.

High Value Software Supplied
For editing and archiving via PC, the new HD Everio models come with the CyberLink BD Solution
software suite for Windows. This includes “PowerDirector™ 6 NE” for HD video editing,
“PowerProducer™ 4 NE” for authoring high definition Blu-ray discs, AVCHD discs and DVD-Video discs,
“PowerCinema™ NE for Everio” for HD file management and playback, and “PowerDVD™ 7 NE” for
playback of AVCHD discs.

The GZ-HD40/HD30 also come with a plug-in that allows HD Everio’s MPEG-2 files to be used with Apple
iMovie HD 6 and Final Cut Pro 5 or 6 video software for the Macintosh. For all camcorders, AVCHD files

<![CDATA[Sony HDR-SR12 Gets Reviewed (Verdict: It's a Winner)]]> According to Camcorder Info, Sony's HDR-SR12 is continuing to push the AVCHD format forward as a viable successor to HDV. It is, by far, the best Sony HDD camcorder on the market—and with 120GB under the hood, it is unmatched in the AVCHD category in terms of capacity. As far as performance is concerned, the SR12 held its own against even the intimidating Canon VIxza HF10, with only a slight inferiority in picture sharpness. They also noted that Sony's Exmor CMOS sensor and Bionz processor has improved in leaps and bounds over their top HDV camcorder, the HDR-HD9.

In the end CI believes that the decision on what to buy is going to come down to a combination of what each individual needs in a camcorder and what they can afford. The HDR-SR12 is going to set you back a few at $1399, but you get a ton of capacity and a HDD for those who prefer it. On the other hand, you could always drop down to the 60GB HDR-SR11 and save yourself about $200. <![CDATA[Canon Vixa HF10 Camcorder Reviewed (Verdict: Best AVCHD to Date)]]> If you have been waiting for a camcorder that gets AVCHD right, the folks at Camcorder Info have some good news. According to their recent review, the Canon Vixia HF10 may have finally brought the format into its own. When compared to an HDV camcorder, the quality of the HF10's images (artifacts, sharpness, color, low light performance) were generally as good, and in some instances maybe even better than its tape-laden counterpart. <![CDATA[Panasonic AG-HMC150 Shoots on SDHC]]> After nearly six years, Panasonic is finally releasing a true HD successor to the popular but aging AG-DVX100. The $6000 AG-HMC150 shares triple CCDs, optical image stabilization, and audio capability with the DVX100, but adds a variety of HD formats including 1080/60i, 1080/30p, and 1080/24p. Panasonic has confirmed a basic 13Mbps recording mode but hasn't given a firm number for the "enhanced mode" for "higher-level use." Hopefully it will be closer to the AVCHD maximum 24Mbps and show what the format is really capable of. It'll use the same SDHC cards you'd use in a basic point-and-shoot. Jump for the press release.

PANASONIC ANNOUNCES ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL AVCHD AG-HMC150 HANDHELD HD CAMCORDER

SECAUCUS, NJ (February 13, 2008) - Panasonic announces a new addition to its growing professional AVCHD product line that capitalizes on the phenomenal success of its popular DV-based AG-DVX100. The new, affordable AG-HMC150 handheld is scheduled for shipment later this year.

The HMC150 is designed to provide enhanced HD production capabilities for video enthusiasts who desire professional features, extended recording capability and the fast, simple and highly reliable workflow offered by tapeless, solid-state recording. <![CDATA[Canon Portable Burner Transfers High Def AVCHD to DVD Without a Computer]]> I'm usually turned off by video transfer/burner devices like this Canon DW-100 because of how unrefined DVD burning still is. The DW-100 takes high-def AVCHD video from your camcorder and burns it to DVD without a computer. It's hard to argue with that.

It can also function as an external burner for any PC or Mac computer. If this works like it should, and Canon markets it properly, a device like this could do well in the current home movie market. <![CDATA[Panasonic's DMP-BD30 Is the $500 Next-Gen Blu-ray Player To Beat]]> Last week Samsung told us its hybrid BD-UP5000 Duo would be the very first next-gen Blu-ray player. Today, Panasonic rolls out theirs, with plans to deliver even faster. The $500 DMP-BD30 will meet the requirements of BD Profile 1.1, also known as "Final Standard Profile." This will be the only next-gen Blu-ray player on the market when it hits in the second week of November. As you read this, Sony and Pioneer are also reading, knowing they probably should have been able to do what Panasonic is doing (and what Samsung claims it will do): deliver a "standard" Blu-ray player by Christmas 2007.

That said, the DMP-BD30 is nothing but "standard." To meet the BD Profile 1.1 spec, it needed internal storage. Panasonic answered that in the the way it knows best, by adding an SD card slot. (This is essentially their way of saying, "Get your own damn 256MB of flash memory," but since I've got more than my share of those, I will happily comply.) It can read JPEGs, MP3s and even video files in the popular high-def AVCHD format used Panasonic high-def camcorders as well as those of competing manufacturers.It's using the P4HD system and Uniphier chip developed for the original DMP-BD10 for 1080p/24p rendering as well as upconversion that can give HQV a run for its money, and it supports HDMI 1.3 for Deep Color (when available).

It's also significantly smaller than its pricier predecessor, as you can see from my picture (top) and the brochure illustration:Of course, the crowning glory of the 1.1 spec is picture-in-picture. Two tuners are required, though as in the case of this player, only one has to be HD. The second tuner is standard-def, but capable of simultaneous reading of other parts of the disc. Those discs aren't yet on the market, but when they hit, this player will be the only thing that can play them. (Samsung's Duo will get that capability following a firmware upgrade promised for January.) That means that, if you are hankering for a Blu-ray player that isn't obsolete the minute it hits the store shelf, your choices are limited, but clear.

Way to go, Panasonic. We applaud your ability to deliver on the Blu-ray promise. Sony, Pioneer, Philips, Sharp, Hitachi... what the heck happened?

PANASONIC INTRODUCES NEXT-GENERATION BLU-RAY DISC™ PLAYER

Only Blu-ray Player to Feature Final Standard Profile

LOS ANGELES CA (October 30, 2007) - Panasonic, a leader in High Definition technology, announced today the introduction of the DMP-BD30, the next generation High Definition 1080p Blu-ray Disc player. The DMP-BD30 is the first Blu-ray player to be introduced with Final Standard Profile, which adds a variety of new and enhanced features to the Blu-ray arena and one that separates the Panasonic Blu-ray player from the rest of the field. Also unique to the DMP-BD30 is the inclusion of an SD Memory Card slot for playback of High Definition content recorded in the AVCHD format. The SD slot also allows for viewing of digital still images recorded to an SD Memory Card.

Final Standard Profile is an advanced function added to the Blu-ray standard, which opens the door to new functions such as Picture-in-Picture (which displays a second image in a sub window) and Audio Mixing (allows the consumer to switch the sound between the main and sub windows).

"The DMP-BD30 will contribute greatly to Blu-ray's mounting lead over the competing format," said Gene Kelsey, Vice President, Panasonic Entertainment Group. "Panasonic's adoption of the Final Standard Profile adds a whole new dimension to the entertainment experience. For example, when the added value features inherent to the Final Standard Profile are incorporated into a Blu-ray movie, the viewer could have a myriad of entertainment options. One of the more intriguing aspects of the Final Standard Profile is the Picture-in-Picture feature that would allow the movie fan to access a variety of entertainment enhancements, such as having the director or an actor pop up to discuss a scene you are watching, or with an animated movie, you might see the actor performing their character's voice over, all while still watching the movie. Not only do these features give Panasonic a strong advantage in the high definition market, but they provide the movie community with numerous opportunities to embellish the viewing experience with additional creative elements."

With an SRP of $499.95, the DMP-BD30 also features a myriad of technology advances, including Deep Color Compatibility, and HDMI 1.3B, that bumps the step gradation from 8-bit 256 all the way up to 12-bit, 4,096 step gradation. To further enhance the viewing experience, the DMP-BD30 also provides 1080/24p playback, so the consumer can enjoy the same 24-fps (frames per second) reproduction as the original movie. This eliminates the need to utilize 3.2 pull down, a process to convert 24-fps images to 60-fps, resulting in a smoother picture.

The inclusion of a multi-function SD Card slot is another new addition to the Panasonic Blu-ray player. Coupled with the AVCHD codec, the DMP-BD30 allows for images recorded on a high capacity HD SD card to be outputted directly from the player's HDMI terminal in their original 1080p form. To further benefit the user, the DMP-BD30 provides an AVCHD Direct Navigator function that makes it easy to search for particular scenes. The player can also play back JPEG still images on an SD card, such as those recorded with a Panasonic Lumix digital camera. The DMP-BD30 converts the images to 1920x1080 resolution, ideal for viewing on a1080p HD Plasma and output them through the HDMI terminal.

Like its predecessor, the DMP-DB30 features the EZ-Sync™ HDAVI Control that allows the consumer to operate their Panasonic home theater system with one remote. With one touch of the EZ-Sync button, all the components turn on, the correct TV input is chosen, the TV's built-in speakers are muted and the home theater starts playback.

Toshiba announced three new HD DVD recorders, including the new flagship Vardia RD-X7. All of them can convert MPEG-2 to AVCHD MPEG-4 on the fly, and can store high-def video on DVD-R (2 hrs) and single-layer HD DVD-R (6 hrs) discs. Pricing and availability are not yet announced. <![CDATA[Canon HG10 High Definition HDD Camcorder Reviewed, Gets Thumbs-Up]]> The Canon HG10 high-definition camcorder, the first HD shooter from Canon to record its video on a hard disk drive (HDD), is out for review. The Camcorder Info guys have gotten their paws on one, and in a nearly book-length epic they exhaustively put the little $1299 camcorder to the test. With a couple of exceptions, they praise almost everything they see.

They start with the glass, digging that lens with its 10x optical zoom. They're also comfortable with the way the camcorder feels in their hands (and we can agree with that after holding it in ours), they admire the zoom control which they call "pro grade," they heartily approve of the controls on the LCD panel, and they even think the manual controls are "killer." Perhaps most importantly, they like the imagers that are underneath all this, the same ones that are in Canon's tape-based HDV camcorder, the HV20.

They're still not crazy about that AVCHD codec, which they say doesn't render motion very well, showing noticeable motion blur. They still think it's inferior to the more mature and less compressed HDV format. They also noticed that the filmmaker-fave 24p mode drops too many frames to actually be useful.

Even with those flaws, they still call this the best HDD camcorder available, writing that "if you're in the market for an AVCHD camcorder, the HG10 offers the highest video quality we've seen so far." <![CDATA[Sony DVDirect Now Records from AVCHD Handycams]]> Sony's latest DVDirect external burner now supports the company's high-def line of camcorders. The VRD-MC5 (big brother to the VRD-MC3 and VRD-VC30) is the first unit capable of burning DVDs from any of Sony's AVCHD cameras. Like previous burners, it'll also come with a memory card slot (it reads all the usual suspects like SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, etc) and a nice 2.5-inch LCD. It's debuting in Japan first for about $246.

<![CDATA[Sony HD Camcorder Line: New DVD, HDV]]> Sony announced 4 new HD camcorders that we got to check out at their booth.

HDR-HC7

This is an HDV-based camcorder, with a 3MP CMOS shooting stills up to 6.1MP. It has a 2.7" LCD...and is pretty standard. Its less-loved sibling, the HC5, has a downgraded 2MP CMOS allowing for 4MP stills Interestingly, the lower end camera also features more digital zoom, as if Sony believes cheaper consumers will be impressed by the pixel-screwing zoom.

Then I took a look at their DVD camcorders...

HDR-UX7
This camera has identical specs to the HC7, but records to DVD in the MPEG4 AVCHD format, allowing you to put 1080ion 3" DVD. It is also the only model in the lineup with a slightly larger, 3.5" screen. I liked how the UDX7 felt in my hand, the DVD extrusion offered a nice grip and added a balance of shooting that the HDV version lacked.

The 4th camera, the UX5, is the DVD camcorder equivalent to the HC5 (confused yet?). Also, both UX models support 5.1 surround sound. You supply the audio crew. SonyPicture%201.png
