It seems like as long as it doesn't have pedals, and a joystick, he's OK.

That ain't a backhoe in the pic. It's a front end loader.

    @PanhandleJoe:

Front end loaders are much larger and articulated, that is a backhoe in the photo. Bucket seems turned to side or missing. I operat Hvt equip, so know the differences.

@CalmingSpirit: Actually, it looks like a farm/AG tractor which has a front end loader and a backhoe attached as attachments, judging by the add-on stabilizer legs. They usually swing down, not drop straight down, like the one in the photo. The bucket is on the back, you can just barely see three teeth of it. I'm guessing it gets its power from the PTO.

My neighbor owns cranes, so I have seen MORE than my share of heavy equipment. My fav was when he set one of his cranes in the back yard and extended the boom ~100ft. He had it higher, but was afraid of snagging planes:

@World'sFastestBrowser_GitEmSteveDave: Oh, I forgot to mention that this was for Christmas, so there was a star on the end of the boom, and he had it up for about two weeks.

@何てこと!「Tayler」!: The fun part is retracting the boom. It doesn't just slide in like you would think. You have to remove some pins, slide a section out and over another, then put the pins back in and can then retract the section. It's awesome.

@USB_Humping_Dog: Yup. Well, at least the pin pulling and pushing. There was hydraulics for the actual extension and retracting, but instead of the simple hit one lever to bring it in and out, it wasn't that easy. Still, I got a kick out of it. How many adult kids get to play w/cranes?

@USB_Humping_Dog: Sadly he moved 1/4m down the road, and since his new house doesn't abut a farm w/a huge driveway(me) that isn't enclosed by trees and doesn't allow for three pt turns, he has to leave all his fun toys at the office instead of home. :(

why steal the atm? why not use the backhoe to open it up and steal the money. Stupid criminals.

@yoshitoshi: The safe inside a ATM is about as secure as any other safe. A backhoe would have a tough time getting through the steel.

Actually, I wrote REI about the incident in their store as I shop at that particular location often. They said that the photographer was welcome to return to the store at any time.

That it was a big misunderstanding and they were going to have a talk w/ Loomis Fargo about the situation.

@Carradine Dies of a Stroke Film at 11: Lite:

Thank you for your email and the opportunity to explain the incident

that occurred between one of our customers and a security company

servicing an ATM in our Seattle store. It is unfortunate that the

situation escalated to the point that the police were called by the ATM

security officers and the customer was detained by the police. At no

time did REI detain the individual and we did not request a trespass to

be invoked. We do not intend to enforce the trespass issued by police,

and the customer is free to visit our store in the future.

We appreciate people sharing their varied points of view about what

should or should not have happened at the store. We regret that the

matter couldn't be defused before the police became involved. One step

we are taking is to discuss with the ATM security company ways to

prevent the circumstances that led to this problem.

We value your patronage and hope to serve your outdoor needs in the

    future.

    Best,

    Bethany
