Dude. They've been spraying your packaged deli meats with phages for a few years now. The phages kill bacteria and prevent spoilage, to our benefit. They may soon be used as an alternative to antibiotics.
The enemy of my bacteria is my friend. #bacteriophage

Back in the 70's I earned a PhD doing bacteriophage genetics, a field then at the acme of biology. Can't say I did anything useful, but by God it was most fun I've ever had.

@dcoaster: Damn it - I knew when I was in the back row making spit wads in Biology that there was important information I was missing.

Honestly, when I learned in Junior High that plants use biological warfare against each other, I finally realized that humans were really no different than any of the other living species around us. "Nature" is truly scary. #bacteriophage

@dcoaster: Standard viral behavior is the subject of high school biology...viruses that, as the article states, infect cells to become their reproduction factories. If this were just an article explaining how the standard virus works, then I'd agree with you. What's different about this is that it uses bacteria instead, a topic that is not typically touched in high school biology (unless you're in AP/IB, which at that point it's college level anyways) and leads to a far more advanced discussion on the topic of viral behavior. Plus the point of the article isn't to be a biology lesson, but rather to highlight the implications of us trying to utilize and mimic bacteriophage behavior for our own gain, which was touched on in the last paragraph. #bacteriophage

How big is our head that we call ourself "Nature's ultimate machine"? This rant is not directed towards gizmodo but all who think that we, the human race, the Homo (sapiens) sapiens, are all the shiznitt. Of course; we are great and stuff, but how short sited are we to think that we are the last stop? Did we learn anything from Darwin? And why are we, the animals that kill each other without concern, the ultimates? #bacteriophage

@Esus: i dont think they meant 'ultimate' as in 'furthest or highest in degree or order'

"And why are we, the animals that kill each other without concern, the ultimates?"

very few humans kill other humans without concern. generally, we're very concerned with acquiring their property or in rectifying their previous deeds when we kill them. even a mindless serial killer displays some level of concern, else why would he bother with all the effort?

Being able to utilize existing biological structures is definitely the future of medicine. Lets just hope we engineer a treatment for cancer thus saving lives before someone makes a new plague that kills indiscriminately. #bacteriophage

Originally called the "Legdickthing", microbiologists renamed it with a proper latin moniker in 1913. They later decided that "Arachnophallus" was also in poor taste, and eventually settled for the more PC "Bacteriophage" #bacteriophage
