Hacked Wii Fit Board Lets You Stumble Around Azeroth
The Germans who hacked a Wii Balance Board from Wii Fit to surf Google Earth have found a much more fun use for the peripheral – running around World of Warcraft. In this follow up video, Simon and Mattieu control a low level gnome exploring Ironforge, avoiding wolves and slamming into tree trunks. Now all they need to do is hack the Wiimote and Nunchuck to understand macros and I will be the fittest WoW player EVER. [Technabob]

Hacked Wii Balance Board Surfs Google Earth
From a technical standpoint, what's going on here isn't all the mind-blowing. A group of German students are using the Wii Balance Board (from Wii Fit) as an input to navigate Google Earth. But what is notable is that the board was programmed to allow users to surf Earth ala unconventionally transparent marketing ploy super heroes. Unfortunately, the turning sensation more closely resembles FPS strafing. But Man must first walk before he can surf—and surf before he can surf the cosmos.

Overall Health Balance Scale Measures Everything But Peen Size
Aimed, one guesses, at Japanese health obsessives, the Overall Health Balance Scale measures a person's health in six different ways: weight; BMI; subcutaneous fat ratio; organ fat level; muscle level; and basal metabolic rate. On top of that, it rates your health on a scale of one to five. Sounds to me like a version of amihotornot.com that you stand on. As well as checking your posture and balance, the Overall Health Balance Scale has got a screen-cum-scanner on a pull string, which semi-detaches from the unit. I think this is aimed perhaps at people so fat that the last time they saw their genitals the Berlin Wall was still standing—and sumo wrestlers. Wii Fit Is Gonna Cost You $90
Nintendo has announced that Wii Fit with the Balance Board will cost $90 when it hits US shelves. We can debate about that price all day, but you should realize that Wii Fit could cost you a lot MORE than $90 if it makes you live longer, you end up buying more food/paying more rent and the debt collectors actually expect you to cough up that cash for your kids' college loans. Moral? Dying young ain't so bad. And Wii Fit is too damned expensive, even if the public "buys" it. [kotaku]

There must be something about the form-meets-function nature of a bookshelf that means designers just can't resist them. In this case, "form" gets an added twist with the addition of a pivot and some sliding weights. So you can have a cookily tilted shelf, or slide the weights around to compensate for an unbalanced library: "Maintain the Balance of Your Knowledge" as designer Denis Oh puts it. Up Close With the Wii Fit
The Brians over at Kotaku got their horribly blistered feet all over the Wii Fit Balance Board and came out with the impression that yes, this is for exercise. After playing it, their legs definitely felt the burn, which reinforces the fact that it's a "challenging" game made for exercise—instead of being an intuitive game like Wii Tennis where you're supposed to "get it" right away.
