Interesting how that car in the photo is not a Ford, but a Lincoln.

The Lincoln knew it had a problem when it stopped socializing with other cars to spend all it's time with it's inflatable friend.

$10K for a blow-up car? I'm clearly in the wrong business. Unless these things are life-raft quality rubberised fabric, they should cost a lot less than that...$1K?

@PeterSimpson: 10k each for so many balloons that can be reused over and over or using a car each time? Even if they did use Junkers (which I somehow doubt, they prbably pull a car off the line to test it), the reusable balloons would save money in the long run. Also I doubt they are latex balloons and are custom made with some sort internal framework.

They're not using them for crash testing, they're using them for crash *avoidance* testing. That way, when something goes wrong, or they need to calibrate and adjust the crash avoidance systems, they're not plowing into actual metal objects.

@Jon Cousins: That's the point of testing. Their systems will probably not work perfectly initially, so there probably will be crashes.

    That's a pretty hot idea.

Achem, I need a $10,000 government bailout for balloon.

@MikeSWelch: While 10 grand is a lot for a balloon, Ford never took any bailout money.

@Jeff_McAwes0me: Even if Ford did get bailout money, why not spend it on a balloon? The whole point is that it is cheaper than smashing up cars.
