in all fairness, they were paying some faction 'protection' money - basically they were extorted. if the mob wants protection money, and you pay it, you're not a willing participant, just a pragmatic one, and frankly the victim in the situation. I actually think their paying off the guerrillas in order to ensure the safety of their employees was the best thing they could have done, given the circumstances. their other options were to close up shop (leaving their workers out of a job) or refuse to pay (putting their workers in mortal dnager) There's nothing any government would do for them, there's nowhere to file a police report. So really the only other, 4th option is to take up arms.

maybe im a sucker for the way they spun it, but of the three choices, if it were me, i'd have done the same.

i know it's a slippery slope given that paying them only increases their power and enables them to continue extorting people, but it's a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't situation.
