It is fair for Amazon to remove adult books from the general searches (which would include all erotic books and books about sexuality). I'm sure lots of older kids and teenagers use Amazon and parents should not have to worry about them viewing the product pages for such books. On the other hand, it is a bit overboard when a book doesn't come up when you search for the exact title.
This is stupid for any company, but especially Amazon.
Yoohoo, dipshits, you're in Seattle... a city with one of the most active LGBT scenes in the northwest.
I'm not gay, and don't even know that many people who are, but this sort of shit pisses me off. You can add another on to the list of people who be shopping elsewhere until they get rid of this policy.
What's really very funny (and ironic) is that when I clicked on the link for "mostly anti-homosexuality garbage" the bottom of the results page -- following the religious books -- had a sponsored link advertising a service for "Gay men seeking gay men" and gay male chat rooms.
"With the new filter in place, a 5:40 p.m. EST search on "homosexuality" over at Amazon search turned up nothing but, well, mostly anti-homosexuality garbage."
Just did a search. Here are some of the results, rank indicated:
1) A Parent's Guide to Preventing Homosexuality
3) 101 Frequently Asked Questions About Homosexuality ("Is change possible for a homosexual")
4) What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality
6) When Homosexuality Hits Home: What to Do When a Loved One Says They're Gay ("How to answer common pro-homosexual arguments")
8) Can Homosexuality Be Healed?
9) Coming Out of Homosexuality: New Freedom for Men & Women ("preparing you for heterosexual romance and marriage")
Uh...yeah. This is crap. No need to make a big stink here on Gizmodo, though. Starting tomorrow I'll be working with GLAAD and other LGBT rights organizations to slam Amazon on this bizarre and despicable policy change.
@skiterr: well we won't need to prevent it if nobody can read how to become a homosexual! Cuz that's how it starts, y'know, with the booklearnin'....
>sheesh<
As a loyal Amazon customer this makes me mad as hell. I'm going to have to do a bit of research before I let them have a piece of my mind, but if this turns out to be the case I'll be doing my shopping elsewhere.
@LuckyFink: He did. I wonder why. Perhaps it has to do with what the First Amendment says:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Last I checked, Congress was part of the Government.

a) they didn't remove heterosexual erotic fiction rankings, nor even the rankings of sex toys.
b) if google can make a safe search option to turn on to keep the kiddies from seeing porn, why can't amazon?

It is not sir, not yet, anyway.
@Tolgak:
I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Did you just say that the first amendment only applies to government?
Yahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, no.
Although to be fair, Apple is right in this case.
