The version you see here is Mark One, and he's already working on Mark Two, as the flap he created after the touch kept falling out of the notebook isn't really practical enough. Sorrel claims he did this to look cool and hip in Barna's bars and cafes and thus get the girls, so I'm looking forward to the follow-up post detailing his successes and failures. How-to video is below.

<![CDATA[Postcard from Barcelona as Jesus and Blam Hit Mobile World Congress]]> Dear Readers, Well, two out of three ain't bad, I guess. I was meant to be joining Blam and the guy in the red hat, Captain Zissou oh yeah, Jesus, I think his name is, for a couple of days in Barcelona, but I have been struck down by a nasty, virulent, ectoplasm-producing cold, so I'm staying home. Never mind, while they go out and fondle sexy new phones in Spain's second city and keep you informed about the hottest cells and smartphones on offer this year, I shall see if I can break the world record for continuous sneezing. UPDATE: Oh, and to anyone who is speculating that J will play fast and loose with booth babes, I can categorically say that it won't happen—unless the booths are furnished with chicks who look like this.

Instead, the Z6w is just a Wi-Fi version of the Z6c but with a cradle added for good measure. Another pic and full specs after the jump.

<![CDATA[Samsung Soul Has Mighty Morphing Touchpad Display]]> Samsung's Ultra Edition range will get a revamp with their new Soul, a 7.2Mbps HSDPA cellphone which, at only 12.9mm thick, it comes with auto focus 5MP camera, 2.2" 320 x 240 pixel full-color display, SD slot and a touchpad display system that will morph the user interface, changing icons according to the application you are using. For example, in music mode playback controls will appear, but whilst sending an SMS these will be replaced with editing functions. The rest of the specs are quite nice too.

<![CDATA[AMD Launches Quad-Core Opteron, a.k.a. Barcelona]]> AMD is finally launching its Barcelona quad-core server chip today, although it's officially being called the Quad-Core Opteron. Intel may have been beating AMD to higher clock speeds recently, but the Barcelona offers some performance and power-saving advantages that should level the playing field again.

Saving power is becoming increasingly important in server rooms now, both because of the high cost of electricity and from pressure to become greener. AMD has developed a system, called CoolCore, where individual parts of the processor are turned off when they're not needed.

There will be nine chip options, all manufactured with 65nm technology, and all with 512KB of level two cache per core and 2MB shared. The top of the range 2GHz 8350 is expected to be priced at $1,019 for quantities over 1,000, with options all the way down to $209. There are expected to be more than 50 products launched this week using the chips, from Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Dell. [AMD]

<![CDATA[HDTV Pinball Machine is Art and Teaches Kids Stuff]]> Ceci n'est pas un pinball machine. Actually, it is, but it manages to be all sorts of things as well. It's an art installation that's currently on show in Barcelona, as well as an interactive game for kids, And, best of all, it uses a widescreen HD telly as one of the displays.

Called King of the House, the pinball game is simple. Left-hand flipper controls the parents' wishes for their kids (school, church, museums, books), while the right hand is all about what the kids want. TV, interweb and video games. It's on show at the Palau de la Virreina in Barcelona for another month. [Flickr via Boing Boing Gadgets]

<![CDATA[MareNostrum, the World's Most Gorgeous Super-Computer]]> This is the 9th biggest supercomputer in the world, MareNostrum. It also happens to be the most gorgeous supercomputer in the world, installed in a former chapel with acres of glass and steel. It belongs to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and is polished daily by hundreds of groveling grad students. Probably.

It has 10,240 CPUs, 20TB of RAM, 280TB of disk storage and runs on SUSE Linux. It can compute at 62.63 teraflops, with a peak performance of 94.21 teraflops, making it the most powerful computer in Europe. [Navel of Narcissus]

<![CDATA[AMD's Barcelona Chips Make a Quick Appearance]]> Perhaps it's a mild case of jealousy, but the folks at AMD are trying to win back the spotlight from Intel by revealing their long-awaited Barcelona CPU.

They demoed a dual processor setup alongside a quad-processor rig for ultimate 4x4 power. The folks at [H]Enthusiast claim the octo-core set up was able to encode 1080p video to H.264 very close to real time. They also said the CPUs are good at keeping their cool (though they did have fans on each CPU). Now all we need is for AMD to hurry and get them out.
