After the glossy sheen of new shiny gadget wore off, it's no better than than then most ereaders on the market for actually reading books. It just has a fancy method for browsing menus. I just want Sony to make a touchscreen ereader with a decent screen because the 600 impressed the hell out of me, but the glare. Good God, the glare.
Yes, by the time they have it in stock in January, it'll be just enough time for people to recieve their orders and then cry when Apple announces their Tablet with color display and color books, magazines, and comic books.
@Noobs-R-Us: no one wants to read books on their over priced tablet. reading on a screen that's not like the nook or kindle for extended periods of time = absolute suck.
@presto117: "no one wants to read books on their over priced tablet"
Famous last words... why don't you come back here and try saying the same thing with a straight face this time next year when millions of people would have bought the new Tablet. You'd be laughed right out of Gizmodo.
@weatherman: Just checked my preorder. Still set for shipment on December 18. Doesn't look like any of the prior preorders were affected. It's all prospective.
I think the title of the story should change to "When will we finally see the convergence of mobile technology into a pocket computer?" It's the direction everything is heading to. Original iPhone was an iPod + a phone, now its a platform for doing damn near anything. eReaders are getting fancier displays and more power, for what purpose?, to branch out their functionality. Eventually we are going to have to see that magical all in one device.
@Rejexted: It's called a PDA... I can watch video/play songs, have about 200 books stored on a SD card, can check email, surf the net, use MS Office documents, and all for about $100 more than one of these. The battery life is pretty good too.
@grok666: There is something to be said for the concept that a "smart phone" could replace nearly all of our technology - MP3, cameras, video player/recorder, computer, web browsing, electronic books, maps, and so forth. Perhaps the future is merely a smart phone, and we could plug our smart phone into a nice big screen for a larger display when we are relaxing. Hard to say where this is going, but none of the e-readers have been something I would consider replacing my books or periodicles with, and this additional technology does not change my perspective.
@Serpentor X: What Mark is saying is that if you used the Qualcomm's method of displaying text in a black and white Kindle, it would increase battery life. And if the Kindle used it to display color, the battery would last a day.
@Knowitallguytherevenge: Dude, don't ever, ever, ever yell first. It's annoying as hell, doesn't add anything, and quite often wrong.
Amazon may be working on something, but coming from a different direction. Amazon is not, foremost, a tech company. Qualcomm, on the other hand, is. You can't hold that against them for that.
@Nathan Obbards: Yep. Amazon doesn't even make the Kindle. They contract that out. And it wasn't even that manufacturing house that developed the e-ink screen they currently use. They source those from another company. When this display is ready I would imagine Amazon, as well as the other reader companies, will buy the parts from Qualcomm. I doubt Qualcomm will start making their own device.
@mfusion: Don't forget to tell mommy. But back on target. It seems like Amazon screwed the pooch by releasing Kindle in such a substandard mode. I knew a few Kindle owners and they're thinking, wtf? But being an early adopter (or whining net cop) is for schlubs.
@Knowitallguytherevenge: Let me get into my time machine, go back to 1950 and tell all those computer engineers with their room filling computers to just mothball everything and wait at least 50 years for the good stuff.
@Knowitallguytherevenge: You know what else is for schlubs? Spraying your doucheyness all over the comments page by yelling FIRST! and then getting pissed when people explain to you that if you want to keep commenting here, you're going to want to stop doing that. It's a nice corner of the internet, this one. It's been kept relatively free of rampant racism, homophobia, and incredibly tired internet memes. A good guideline: If it's funny on 4chan, leave it there.
@badhatharry: LOL, look at all the guiltless children lining up to chime in. Such individualism. Careful, if you think for yourself you might strain something.
@Knowitallguytherevenge: Really? So you're the guy with the can of Pepsi and the boombox and we're all retirement home residents who all start crumping when you press play?
@Knowitallguytherevenge: That almost makes up for the !first! But not for using a tired internet meme for the 8 billionth time and then lecturing us on our lack of individualism. #tips
Oh, although it's a cumbersome solution if you can get your 360 plugged into a computer with wireless you can get it online that way. It's a little fiddly as you have to set up a shared connection for it but it's a cheaper alternative to a dedicated adaptor. It works for PS3's too, which is useful if you want to connect your PSP to your PS3 via adhoc and don't have access to a wired connection.
Just to note any sort of wireless bridge will do the same job as MS's wireless adaptor too. #gizmodoremainders

You sure do show a real lack of foresight.

So it's, in essence, a non-touchscreen PADD? Seems like Star Wars and Star Trek tech is imminent.

But an answer to your question maybe that Amazon did not come up with their own eink technology. They get it from companies like Qualcomm.
