i can meet you half way: when i was a kid my dad gave me his old pellet rifle. i'd drop old fashioned matches (non-safety or strike-anywhere or whatever they are called) down the barrel and shoot those. when they hit their target their flare up for a second. i could light our BBQ from 50 paces!

I got one of these in my stocking at Christmas. It's awesome to pull out to lite a smoke.

It would have been very helpful in college for the 4' water pipe to have an extra 14" to get to the chamber.

@vshank: You couldn't reach the bowl on a 4 footer? Try an 8 footer (incidentally I have schematics/build list) for an excellent disposable 8 footer that you can build for ~$15...

@Toshie: For overall use and performance, size doesnt matter, but the ladies may want to take a look at that "14.5" implement" just for the freak show shock value of it, then they will run away to a safe distance since you could poke your eye out on one of those.

Uhh, barbecuing and grilling are two different things. One is slow cooking and takes hours resulting in delicious pork and beef. The other is quick and results in decent steak, burgers, brats and hot dogs.

Seems the makers of this product can't even be bothered to tell the difference. Everyone I know that does actual barbecue wouldn't bother with something stupid like this to light coals. Oh, wait, nevermind they use propane since it's easier to get even heating over a longer period of time and use wood chips for flavor.

@SynMonger: And you're completely ass backwards on the gas/charcoal thing.

Real barbecuing/smoking is done over low heat for a long time, being that the heat is so low means precise control of the temp isn't necessary. And I've never seen a person competing in a barbecue contest use gas...

Gas on the other hand is quick, even heat, perfect for grilling.
