I used to have a "universal star" but then all the new starred commenters lost their stars. Then I made a "hilarious" comment and Rosa re-starred me and it became Gizmodo only.

(Damn me and my great comments which result in early re-starrings.)

How much of your music do you regularly use? (That dusty stack of cassettes and the 8 hard drives of stolen material under your desk don't count, because you don't actually listen to them. But the LPs probably do, because you put them on when dates come over.)

I keep just over 40G in iTunes and on my iPod that I almost always listen to on shuffle. That's 30 days of constant music that makes up my "regular rotation." Really too much for one person, but I'm guessing less than many of you?

#whitenoise

@92BuickLeSabre: About 120 gigs of music, perhaps 70-80GBs of which I truly adore and couldn't bear to part with. File sizes can be a bit misleading though, as that can speak more about your encoding preferences than it does about the amount of music you actually have.

But that's an unnecessary tangent :) Sorry.

I recently had to back-up my computer before a Win 7 install, so all of music is actually elsewhere. I was considering doing some serious pruning, but I hate the idea of deleting music. I'm a digital packrat, I suppose.

@92BuickLeSabre: I have 149.83G. For pleasure, I use maybe 50G. For work/hobby (more of a hobby because I do it in my spare time, and mostly for free), I am a sound designer for local theater. I use a wide variety of the remainder in those shows. I love it, but I can't listen to a lot of 20th Century classical music for funsies.

And even then, with the 50G, I usually gravitate towards Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Death Cab For Cutie, and Sigur Ros.

@92BuickLeSabre: I still haven't finished listening through my collection (probably about 40G). That's mainly due to the fact that I tend to put certain songs on repeat depending on my mood. One day, though, I WILL finish.

what are your absolute favorites, as a suggestion? I'm always looking for new stuff

addendum:
iTunes said I've only completely played through 1800/4000 songs, but I'm not sure how accurate that is. More often than not, I'll skip through a song if i don't like it

new playlist: 2300 not-played all through nor rated. I'll get on that

@92BuickLeSabre: Penderecki, Ligeti, Part, John Cage, etc. You watch Kubrick Films? The music on "Jupiter and Beyond The Infinite" or whatever the end is called, is Atmospheres by Ligeti. The music from Eyes Wide Shut is also Ligeti. Have you seen Children of Men? The music when he's chasing the mother and her kid through Bexhill and into the apartment building in one long shot? Penderecki. The same piece is also used in The Shining. There Will Be Blood? Most of that music is either Arvo Part, or Jonny Greenwood biting Arvo Part's rhymes.

This doesn't encapsulate all of it, but one major characteristic of 20th Century classical is an absence of melody, and use of more experimental music theory such as note clusters. The piece from Children of Men is a famous one called "Threnody To The Victims of Heroshima." It uses a number of string instruments all playing semitones apart (a fraction of the difference between one note and another. It is easiest to do this on a stringed instrument with no frets).

But really, all classical music written after 1900 is 20th Century classical.

@RT100: I was in a few bands in high school and college. We wrote our own stuff, but were not very good. Our biggest hit was a spanish cover of We Got The Beat entitled "Tenemos El Beat." I actually don't have a lot of background in theory. I only know the western major scale. My degree is in sound design for theater, and I tried to take as many music classes as I could, but the theory ones were limited to music majors. I mainly took general lecture classes.
#whitenoise
Reply

Image of Captain K'nuckles Captain K'nuckles 09:35 PM

@badhatharry: As much as I enjoy Threnody, I must admit that I find quite a bit of Penderecki to be taxing. Actually, I find most the atonalists to be taxing. Taking Schoenberg too literally should be considered a criminal offense. It's as insufferable as romanticism for me. The best music is dramatic and dynamic, it's both major and minor, consonant and dissonant.

But I do really appreciate several modern composers. Arvo Part comes to mind, since you mentioned him earlier :)

Well, I think if the defense is out o position (especially in the zone happy NCAA ) a good cross court pass can give you one of those open 3s that college ball is all about.
Personally I hate college ball. The 3 point line is to close, defenses generally suck, and the style of play is boring.

Nowadays in the NBA team ball is win so you don't see all the boring ISO plays of the 90s.

Word Of The Day is a new daily feature for whitenoise by modestmouse, highlighting tech-related terms you may or may not have heard of before.

Todays word: Asshat |as-hat| noun

Definition: A close cousin of the Ass-clown, asshat is typically identified by a jovial expression and an outward misunderstanding of how he/she is perceived, combined with a generally misguided conception of what is sociably acceptable amongst his/her fellow peers.

Said persons' frequent attempts at humor usually lead to he/she making an ass out of his/herself. Not to be confused with ass-hole.

An asshat can also be described as: A person, of either gender, whose behavior displays such ignorance/obnoxiousness that you would like to make them wear their own ass as a hat.

Or: One who has their head up their ass, thus wearing their ass as a hat. Someone who is very ignorant, stubborn or dull.

Example(s): "Quit throwing pennies at that homeless man, you asshat."

or

"Hey asshat, thanks for double parking."

Recent Event: [gizmodo.com] was recently banned for calling Jesus Diaz an asshat.

"@Jesus Diaz: Woh there cowboy; as it happens I used to be a director at a major 3D Asset Marketplace and have worked in the Uk game industry, so 3D did actually used to be one of my things.

I wasn't even complaining, just wondering if the other visual aspects were accurate; which I think is a very fair point.

Anyway, if you can send me the source 3D file I'll be happy to re-render it more realistically (assuming I can get some source photography and luminescent data); I patiently await the file.

asshat."
