It's unconfirmed by any of my Samsung contacts, but apparently the new high end Blu-ray disc player from Samsung is being canceled, while the long awaited hybrid disc player, the first with total HD DVD and Blu-ray compatibility, is being delayed. That's important for several reasons. The hybrid BD-UP5000 player is supposedly going to be rated up from the common and underwhelming 1.0 profile that almost every Blu-ray player announced so far has to full 2.0 compatibility (BD-Live) with picture in picture, ethernet and a GB of persistent memory to put it on par with HD DVD's mandatory spec. The speculation on the BD-P2400 is that maybe its too minor of a step up from the now shipping BD-P1400, only adding 7.1 surround from 5.1, and upscaling. [The Reg]
Samsung Hybrid BD-UP5000 Delayed?
officially official
One of the most widely known open secrets of the CE world became official today, when Samsung formally announced the existence of the BD-UP5000 combo Blu-ray HD DVD player, specifically that it will ship in Q4 for a list price of $1049. In addition, Samsung wedged in an announcement of the $1,499 HT-BD2 1,100-watt Blu-ray 7.1 home theater in a box, and further confirmation of the two latest Blu-ray players, the BD-P1400 and BD-P2400 we also told you about. More details, pictures, press release, and a helpful spec sheet comparing all four products after the jump.

Samsung's follow ups to the highly regarded BD-P1200 are here, and they are upgraded with audio format support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD. Everyone else looks pretty much the same, including this magic list: 24 frame support, HDMI 1.3, and ethernet. Except the 1400 doesn't have that mind-blowing HQV video processor at $549 while the 2400 has it at $599 ($599 is the same price as the 1200, btw.) This slight improvement is ok, considering how great the previous model's reviews and features were. Don't mess with a good thing, just tweak it. Due in Sept/Oct respectively. Not necessarily worth waiting for over the current model, IMHO, if you have to buy now.
