Amazon Lists Samsung BD-UP5000 Hybrid HD DVD and Blu-ray Player for $800, Jan. 15 Release

Samsung's BD-UP5000 hybrid HD DVD and Blu-ray player—so far, the best one around—with BD 1.1 hardware support, now has a price and date of the Amazon variety: Jan. 15, 2008 for only $800, $250 off the MSRP. Because it's Amazon's word, not Samsung's, don't take the date as diamond solid, but feel free to get in on the pre-order action to lock down the hot price. [Amazon via I4U]

Awesome Dual Format Disc Player Imminent, Format War Only Theoretical Now?

Did you hear? The Samsung BD-UP5000 is coming with full HD DVD and Blu-ray support, including the best in class profile 1.1 support for picture in picture, etc. for BD. At $1000, it isn't cheap. But you'll avoid the ugly situation of having to choose between a disc player that plays Casino Royale (BD) or Transformers (HD DVD). This is the first HD disc player we can recommend wholeheartedly from a feature standpoint, but of course, it's not that simple. I'm sure some of you will want to opt for the other choices. Maybe you want a game console with HD disc playback, or don't have an HDTV yet. Maybe you're interested but are waiting for the price points to drop on players. Thoughts? [How To Comment]

Samsung's Already Awesome HD Disc Hybrid BD-UP5000 Upgraded to Profile 1.1 (Bye Bye Format Bitching)

Samsung's HD disc player was going to be the first to do both HD DVD and Blu-ray completely right. But now, it's perfect: Samsung just sent us an alert saying the dual-format BD-UP5000 Duo HD player will come hardware-ready for BD Profile 1.1—at least 256MB of internal storage, secondary audio and video decoders, virtual file system. You realize that the rest of the Blu-players this fall totally lack this, and it's a wonder how Sony and everyone else can get away selling old spec Blu players while calling them new. This player ends that, and is the only one we recommend. At the risk of being hyperbolic, this player could be the beginning of the end of the format war's significance to consumers. More »

    Samsung Hybrid BD-UP5000 Delayed?

It's unconfirmed by any of my Samsung contacts, but apparently the new high end Blu-ray disc player from Samsung is being canceled, while the long awaited hybrid disc player, the first with total HD DVD and Blu-ray compatibility, is being delayed. That's important for several reasons. The hybrid BD-UP5000 player is supposedly going to be rated up from the common and underwhelming 1.0 profile that almost every Blu-ray player announced so far has to full 2.0 compatibility (BD-Live) with picture in picture, ethernet and a GB of persistent memory to put it on par with HD DVD's mandatory spec. The speculation on the BD-P2400 is that maybe its too minor of a step up from the now shipping BD-P1400, only adding 7.1 surround from 5.1, and upscaling. [The Reg]

Hands-On Samsung's BD-UP5000 Hybrid HD DVD and Blu-ray player (Verdict: So Far, the Best)

I just had some hands-on time with Samsung's BD-UP5000 Duo HD, their first hybrid Blu-ray and HD DVD disc player. It's so good, it might as well be called BD-UP-Yours-Format-War. (Get it? Yeah, sorry, that wasn't too funny.) It's not the industry's first hybrid disc player—the LG BH100 has that honor. But it is the first to actually be fully compatible with both, and therefore the one that could end the HD Disc bitch fight. More »
