All a blueray player does is lift the digital signal from the disc, process the signal and deliver it to the HDMI connection. Looking aside from some audio codec licensing, since digital components being cheap, then what is the quality difference from a 200$ and a 1000$ bd-player? I mean, it is all digital - its not like in the old days where to quality of the D/A converters made all the difference? Which components can you stuff in cabinet that makes it worth 1000$?
@mikkelfunck: proprietary processes and the related hardware. have you ever bought a DVD player at a grocery store? yeah, try that and you'll know why there is a difference.
my guess will have to end up being the ethernet cord and the other 90 plugins/adapters.. also a big name brand (if this is one) usually charges alot for the "sleek desgin" i.e. apple and sony when they originaly released the ps3.
@John Mirusso: Correct me if I'm wrong, but the PS3 comes with similar features (not all), and plays games yet costs several hundred less even when it was first released....? Point?
Seems like a waste. I love there products and treasure the Harmon Kardon receiver I have, but what in gods name could justify $1000 on a blu ray player? I bought a blu ray drive for my computer for $79.
@p0op: Did you not see the name Harman Kardon? That's what you are paying for. Fergawdzake, if you took the identical unit and slapped the name Emerson on it, you could only charge $129 or so.
