I mean, if it was Elvis I could understand, but the Beatles?? They have at most 3 good songs.

They could write music. But not play it. There.

Technically speaking, the mono mixes are considered the 'preferred' versions, as those were the mixes the Beatles and George Martin oversaw. Stereo was still something of a new concept (and considered by some to be a fad), so stereo mixing was typically handed over to a lower-level engineer.
Only "Abbey Road" and "Let it Be" (and "Revolution 9" on the "White Album") were mixed primarily for stereo. "Mono" versions of those albums were just mix-downs of the stereo tracks.

I'm not the biggest Beatle fan around, but I like the music and recognize their influence on society and music itself. If not an admirer of the band you have to admire what they did to shape the direction of music. If you listen to their sound as it progresses over time you will hear it go from simple monophonic sounds to very complex, multi-layered, polyphonic sounds. Listen to Love Me Do then compare it to Penny Lane, Eleanor Rigby, Strawberry Fields, etc. to get an idea of what I'm talking about. They probably had the greatest influence on what we consider modern music.

.
Seriously. As far as seminal bands go, give me the MC5, or Iggy, or the Sex Pistols, or the Velvet Underground, or the Clash. At least there is a pulse.
