That's the Beats edition of HP's Core i7-powered Envy 15, which doesn't look like a MacBook wannabe but its own glossy-black-and-red man. The privilege, and included Beats headphones, add $500, but it's kinda worth it. [HP via Electronista]

<![CDATA[Dr. Dre Beats Solo Headphones Bring The Same Big Sound In a Smaller, Cheaper Package]]> Audiophiles everywhere have been raving about Dr. Dre and Monster's Studio Beats headphones—but not so much about the the $300 price tag. Beats Solo headphones provide a similar listening experience in a smaller package priced at $220.

In other words, Beats Solo provides users looking to tap into Dr. Dre's formidable experience in quality sound a third option that fits neatly between the Studio Beats and the in-ear Tour Beats product. It also features ControlTalk functionality for on-cable control of your music and phone calls. It's still not cheap by any means, but it seems to me that Beats Solo might be the porridge that's just right as far as high quality headphones are concerned. [BusinessWire via DVICE]

<![CDATA[Tonium Pacemaker Portable DJ System for Aspiring (and Novice) DJs]]> The Tonium Pacemaker, contrary to its name, will not maintain your heart's natural beat from the inside. It's a portable DJ system, packing a 60/120GB HDD, that simplifies the DJing process in a pocket-sized package.

Compared to the previous version, this year's Pacemaker brings a "completely reworked" UI that promises to be more user-friendly, along with some nice beat-matching features to make it easier to keep the flow going. A one-click "auto beat match" function and a visual beat graph takes the guesswork out of matching BPI, and the new version will also let you bend pitch without changing tempo, and vice versa.

The solid file support is still there, and the Pacemaker comes in 60GB as well as the standard 120GB versions, and the 60GB is available now for $500. We're sure it won't be a substitution for a full DJ system, and experts will no doubt look down their noses at it, but for an experienced beginner who wants to be able to fit his rig in his pocket, it's probably a solid choice. <![CDATA[This is Why the Limited Edition White Dr. Dre Monster Beats Cost 2x As Much]]> Gear Live, through a hands-on, has finally figured out why the white version of the Monster Beats cost twice as much as the standard black version. It's coated by Colorware.

We love Colorware and their penchant for coating our favorite gadgets in a scratch-resistant quality finish, but to double the price? Colorware has never done that.

Gear Live finds that these limited edition cans will only be sold at the Ron Herman boutique store in LA, where these are pitched as not just a pair of headphones, but a fashion accessory. Only twenty pairs of these white Dr. Dre Beats will be made, which accounts for white a large chunk of that price tag. Head over to Gear Live to see how they look. [Gear Live]

<![CDATA[Monster Offers White Version of Beats Headphones, Charges $700 For No Discernable Reason]]> If there's a company out there that engages in price gouging more blatantly than Monster, I've never heard of them. Today's offense: charging $700 for a pair of $350 headphones painted white.

The headphones in question are the Dr. Dre Beats headphones, a nice pair of over-the-ear cans with noise cancellation and a cellphone mic built in.

Now, Monster and some guy names Ron Herman are offering up white versions of the Beats in a limited edition run. The price for the new paintjob is $699. That is the only difference between the two sets of headphones: the color.

Seriously Monster, I know you like money, but good lord, at least try to disguise your unquenchable greed a little bit. [CrunchGear]

<![CDATA[Samsung Puts Stupid Motion Control in Music Phones, Thinks It's a Great Idea]]> I don't know when cellphone manufacturers are going to realize that adding gimmicky cheap features to their cellphones won't make them better, smarter, or more interesting. Example: accelerometers are great but would I like to use my hands like bloody David Copperfield to control my music? I would do it to make a hot chick on top of a dragon riding a Harley appear out of thin air, but not to play my music, change a track, or mute my phone, which is exactly what Samsung's run-of-the-mill BEATb and BEATs do. The idea is so last year, although Samsung has added even more functions.

According to Samsung:

Samsung BEATb and Samsung BEATs come with ‘Motion Play’ feature, which enables users to control their music with just few simple motions. For instance, users can play or pause music simply by tapping their phone. By flipping the phone, the music is muted and the phone is automatically set at the etiquette mode. Moreover, by simple shaking the phone, users can play the next song or previous song.

Thankfully for Samsung fans, and knowing that people won't use this feature except to show off with their friends and to play for the first three days, they also include physical buttons. Do you think motion control is useful or even usable for full music control?

<![CDATA[Lightning Review: Dr. Dre and Monster Headphones vs. a Jackhammer]]> The Gadget: Dr. Dre and Monster's Beats headphones, which combines noise cancellation/isolation with an in-line microphone for cellphones. Plus, you have Dre's expertise in knowing what sounds good, which makes for a good pair of cans.

The Price: $350

The Verdict: Strong. The sound quality is pretty great, with good bass reproduction without being too heavy handed, and decent mediums and highs. Not the best all-around headset compared to Sennheisers, but pretty darn good. The Beats also ship with two headphone cables, one of which has an on-board microphone/toggle switch for taking and making calls. It performs this job quite admirably as well.

On the other hand, it might be because my head is too big or my ears stick out too much, but the Beats just barely fit on my head and grip my ears at its most extended. People with heads larger than me—there shouldn't be many of you out there—might want to try this on first before buying. The ear cups aren't extraordinarily comfortable, but they're wearable. Remember Dre's appearance at the VMA's last year? His head was pretty tiny on his buff body. Maybe that's why these are small.

But the most interesting feature is the noise cancellation. You have to have a pair of AAA batteries loaded in at all times, but the resulting isolation is more than enough to drown out an insanely annoying jackhammer that's been going at it outside my house for the past two weeks.

The Beats may not be the best at noise cancellation, the best at sound reproduction, or the best at making and taking calls, but it does all of the above well, and should be good enough for most people. [Beats]
