I call BS on the "never stretching or breaking". I've never seen a belt used in any other application that didn't stretch over time. And I have to imagine that the power output of a Pro Tour rider could easily stretch the chain over the course of a stage race. Maybe even over a single particularly challenging mountain stage. Are there any long term tests that bear this out? On the other hand, I do like the idea of a clean drive train. I don't care what kind of lube you use, a chain is going to get dirty if you ride any kind of serious distance.
This would be Trek's third belt drive (District and Soho being the first two). I also noticed Trek raising the MSRP of the regular District this past weekend. Also, this is not a fixed gear as it has a freewheeling rear hub. Fixed gear requires you to pedal anytime the wheel rotating.
@ProperBritish: Doesn't this really depend on the quality and composition of the belt? I'm sure Harley Davidsons and Buells are not popping belts left and right all the time.
Might be a dumb questions but wouldn't a belt drive only have one speed? Gears on a regular bike let you shift up or down. Isn't this just a $3360 one speed mountain bike?
$3,360 is nothing for a road bike. Serious starter bikes are at about 1000 dollars. If really get into it (or you start racing) the sky is the limit as you try to shave grams of the various components, such as rims. We are talking an easy 5000+.
My bike's frame alone was 1k+, and it's not even close to being the best one out there, so with all the extra parts and goodies you're looking at way over this, so it's a great price. I now want a new bike, cuz dat is zzexy.
3,360 isn't actually that expensive for a road bike. The base models start around 1k, but the one's you see people riding during the tour du france almost all cost more than this one does.
