Ben, a graphic designer by training, gives plenty of insight into his design philosophy—he calls the process "whoring it up"—and there's plenty of oddmod eye candy to longingly gaze at.

But let's cut straight to it: this is kind of disappointing. Why? Because for every interesting new fact we learn about Ben Heck, a myth is shattered. Fantastic myths, these were! For example, he—Herr Benjamin Heckendorn—doesn't have a German accent. At all! [Engadget]

<![CDATA[Ben Heck's PS3 Slim Laptop is Monochromatic Cool]]> Modder extraordinaire, Ben Heck, is back in form with a sleek pin-striped laptop based on the new PS3 Slim. Like his Xbox 360 laptop, it has a big 17-inch Gateway 1775W screen (1280 x 720 resolution). Watch his walk-through:

There's a storage nook for the power cord, front slot-loading Blu-ray drive, and an Iron Man Arc reactor-inspired fan grill. He also says it could have been made smaller, but he wanted to keep the big 17-inch display. Sexy! (More pics once Ben uploads them to his site).

<![CDATA[Ben Heck's Latest Atari 800 Laptop Could Be His Best Yet]]> With the help of a GameCube power supply and the malleable magic hands of master modder Ben Heck, one lucky client can now play Buck Rogers and other classics on a positively portable Atari 800 laptop.

As Ben notes in the video, it's really the vintage Atari keyboard that sells this thing. The clickity clack is unmistakable, soothing and flashback inducing all in one—he even managed to get the thing to pop up at near the same angle as the original!

Some more specs, courtesy Ben's web site:

- Base unit is Atari XEGS motherboard, as usual.
- XE 130 RAM expansion built-in.
- Uses MyIDE circuitry and custom OS ROM to use a 2.5″ PATA hard drive. Very fast! You can check out Mr Atari's site here.
- Large 15″ screen, similar to the C64 laptop but this one is better looking and shinier (obviously important)
- Uses original, new-old-stock Atari 800 keyboard. This is probably the best keyboard in the history of computing, so it was worth including, despite the complications (see story)
- Flush-mount cartridge slot.
- Amazing old-school styling!

Oh, and there's the classic Ballblazer too:

<![CDATA[Ben Heck's Latest Xbox 360 Laptop]]> Ben Heckendorn—true geek god amongst men—is back with revision 5 of his portable Xbox 360 console.

Though he's gutted the same Gateway 1775W laptop with 17-inch (1280 by 720) display, he writes that this design is from scratch, and has the following new features:

• Built-in Ethernet port, finally.
• Built-in WiFi adapter, as usual.
• Digital pushbutton volume control rather than a clunky knob. Different, better sounding audio amp
• Flush-mount DVD door and side panels (such as the memory card slots)
• IR sensor for the remote control.
• Two user USB ports.
• More air holes!
• Jasper motherboard.

Check out the video for more.

<![CDATA[Ben Heck's New Commodore 64 Laptop Going Up For Auction For Charity]]> Ben Heck, console modder extraordinaire, has just finished up his newest Commodore 64 laptop, and he's auctioning it off for charity.

It is very similar to the first C64 laptop I built, with the key difference being it uses the newer 1541-III Ultimate SD-card based storage solution / disk emulator. USB and Ethernet ports for this device are open and available on the front of the unit.

Want it? You'll need to wait until the auction goes live. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society, so really, it'd be a good deed to buy it. Right? [Ben Heck via CrunchGear]

<![CDATA[Super Advantage Custom Xbox Controller Loses an Analog Stick, Gains Style]]> This may look like an old SNES gamepad, but oh, it isn't. No, it's a custom Xbox 360 gamepad. And sure, it lost an analog stick somewhere in its creation process, but it's still so damned cool.

Created by BenHeck.com forum member Hifeno, this slick little operator is perfectly suited for playing fighting games such as Street Fighter IV, but would probably get you iced pretty quickly in a game of, say, Call of Duty.

Not that you've got a shot at using this thing. It's a one-of-a-kind creation, not for sale, only for drooling over. [BenHeck.com via Technabob]

<![CDATA[Dreamcast Tablet Is Cast From The Mold of My Dreams]]> Doing one better than the endless console-to-laptop mods out there, this minimalist tablet conversion flattens an entire Dreamcast into a sleek, tray-loading LCD screen. Nothing is overlooked hereit's even got batteries.

Aside from the modified disc tray and 3.5 hour battery pack, the Dream Tablet also boasts external A/V connections, so you can always hook it up to a TV should you be so inclined. Sloppy Ben Heck apostles should take note, as this tablet follows the two core precepts of console modding:

1.) It is usable, and somehow better than the original
2.) It will no be confused for a homemade dirty bomb if you take it out in public

Know these, and you shall go far. [Mod of the Week via Kotaku]

<![CDATA[Ben Heck's Blow-Powered Kick Pedal Lets People in Wheelchairs Enjoy Guitar Hero 4]]> Super-modder Ben Heck has used his powers for good. Again! This time, he's helping the wheelchair-bound enjoy Guitar Hero 4's drums by using a blow-tube to operate the kick pedal.

Heck took apart the kick pedal that came with GH4's drum set and used the piezoelectric switch in it, McGuyvered it into a little chamber with a diaphragm and added a tube that uses air to hit the switch. Voila, instant breath-controlled pedal!

Want to help a friend in need? Heck's posted the way to do this mod on his [website. [Hackaday]

<![CDATA[Homemade Portable Playstation Won't Win Any Beauty Contests]]> Normally, the portable consoles that spring forth from the handy folks at the Ben Heck forums are sleek, professional-looking affairs. This wooden PS1? Not so much.

Dubbed the PSOneP and created by a gentleman by the name of gamefreak11, this handheld Playstation is constructed mainly of balsa wood. It has a lid that houses the screen that flips up, and the most ghetto looking controller ever built into the bottom. But hey, it works, and that's certainly more than I can say about any portable console I've tried to cobble together. So kudos to you, gamefreak11, for knowing that the beauty of a portable console is not skin deep. [Ben Heck Forums]

<![CDATA[Tiny Portable N64 is A Battery Away from Perfection]]> Modder extraordinaire Ben Heck is growing disciples like Chia Pets, and his forum poster SifuF's new Nintendo Sixtyfree Lite-R is an incredible little portable N64. We're sure he's made the Heckster proud.

The Sixtyfree Lite-R features a 5-inch screen, headphone jack, C-button stick, and the smallest case we've seen yet in a portable N64 mod. It's got all the buttons on a traditional N64 controller, which is no small feat, and manages to evoke the same toy-like plasticky design aesthetic as the original console. The only caveat? No batteries. The case is too small to hold an internal battery, although SifuF notes that you can clip an InfoLithium battery onto the back in addition to the standard 7.2v supply it was designed for. Take a gander at the gallery below, this is one incredible job. [Ben Heck Forums]

<![CDATA[How To Buy the Cool-Running Xbox 360 'Jasper']]> While Xbox 360s have become increasingly capable at handling their crippling heat defects, you still want the newest, coolest 360 you can buy. Right now, that's the "Jasper" edition, featuring a new 65nm GPU.

You should note, the GPU appears to be Jasper's major relevant revision, and it keeps the same huge heatsink found on the previous iterationwhich is probably a good thing, actually. The other revision is that on-board memory stores NXE in the Jasper Xbox 360 Arcade. (It's unconfirmed as to whether or not such is true in the 60GB models of the 360.)

To pick up a Jasper of your own, look through the hole in the Xbox 360 box. You need to spot the number of amps used by the 12 volt railnot that hard, we promise. You can spot that right next to the 12V delineation. Since the new system uses 12 amps, look for this number to read "12."

In other words, buy 12V-12 and everything is good. Buy 12V-14 and you are getting an earlier model. [Engadget]

<![CDATA[Console Modder Ben Heck Making Film Starring Giant Robotic Possum]]> It's called Possumus Woman, and he's almost done with it. <![CDATA[Ben Heck Mods Atari 7800 into Portable Retro-Gaming Wonder]]> Modding clever-clogs Ben Heck was apparently daunted by the complexity of the Atari 7800's internals at first, so he had to summon up the nerve to try this requested mod. Into the custom-built chassis he squeezed a 7-inch color widescreen display, a set of rechargeable batteries, combo driving/paddle controller and an A-V output. Though it's not exactly pocket-friendly (thanks to the 7800's large motherboard) it's still pretty awesomecheck out the gallery. Ben's site has a detailed making-of story if you're interested. Now, if you excuse me... I'm off to reminisce about playing Pole Position. [Ben Heck via Hackaday]

<![CDATA[One-Handed Guitar Hero, So Pirates Can Rock Like Ninjas]]> Modder Ben Heckendorn is more than a little obsessed with playing games one-handed (giggle, chuckle, milk through the nose, etc.) and his latest creation takes aim at Guitar Hero. It's a pedal that plugs into a modded guitar and replaces the controller's strum and whammy bars, requiring hand use only for the chords.

pedal_ben.jpgWhile stomping your way around DragonForce's Through the Fire and Flames doesn't sound anatomically correct, the pedal actually allows you to, for lack of a better term, foot-double-strum (both the up and down motions count as a string pluck).

To activate the whammy, the user lifts up on their heel to release the spring-loaded rear of the pedal. Yeah, it sounds a bit confusing, but Heckendorn makes it look pretty normal in this example video. Well, as normal as geeking out to Guitar Hero will ever look, at least. [Ben Heck]

<![CDATA[Ben Heck's Latest Wonder Project: PS3 Laptop]]> It looks like the PS3 is finally getting some hot mod love from console modding's reigning wizard, Ben Heck. We don't really have all the details since he hasn't announced the project yet, but the display looks like it's the one he used for the Xbox 360 Elite laptop, for a true 720p picture. He's obviously been leveling up his already formidable powers though, 'cause this is one of his most polished projects yet. There's another shot from the side after the jump. Update: Turns out, we stumbled onto a special project for Engadget to auction off for charity! If you'd like to own this bad boy, more details are here, or at Ben's site. [Ben Heck, Thanks Wallop]

<![CDATA[Home Modder Idol Ben Heck Gets Profiled]]> You've seen Ben Heck's homemade gaming devices featured here a lot, and there's a reason for it: Adam Frucci loves him. Which is why he slathered much praise on the hardware modder in this Reuters profile. What would you want to know about the guy that turns two handed controllers into one handed ones? How about that he used to work for a sign-making business and doesn't actually play a whole lot of games, despite the love he gives to the accessories. [Reuters]

<![CDATA[One-Handed Xbox 360 Controller (Take 2)]]> Ben Heck, maker of the most incredible video game hardware mods on the planet, has made another version of his one-handed controller for the Xbox 360. Looking a lot easier to hold, it requires the use of your leg to control the right analog stick (and idea that sounds weirder than it probably actually feels). But the oddest design choice? A PlayStation d-pad was actually stuck in the unit, meaning that in time, the controller could cause a paradox destroying the entire Universe. [benheck]

<![CDATA[Xbox 360 Elite Laptop]]> Benjamin Heckendorn (aka Ben Heck) is known to most of the geek world as a console modding god. And his latest accomplishment, squeezing an Xbox 360 Elite into a laptop, is his best revision yet. Because while he's made 360 laptops before, this is his first based upon the newer 65nm chipset (plus it features the Elite's larger 120GB hard drive). And we especially appreciate that the 17" screen Heck installed uses a 1280×720 resolution (as opposed to 1280X768) for true 720p picture. Yes, we really are mega geeks. Hit the jump to watch Heck's demo video as he loads Halo 3.

<![CDATA[Ben Heck Sticks an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller into an Original Xbox Controller]]> Console modder Ben Heck generally takes formerly gigantic things and crams them into small packages. For his most recent project, he did the opposite: He stuck an Xbox 360 wireless controller into an original Xbox controller, which is monstrous in size. While yes, he added batteries and wireless capabilities to the original Xbox controller, it just doesn't feel as exciting as, say, an Xbox 360 laptop. I mean, who wants to go back to that terrible controller, anyways? [Ben Heck via Technabob]
