Backgrounder is the sole reason I jailbroke my iPhone and I think it is a must have if you have a jailbroken iPhone.

You cannot be leaving out xbmc remote...80% of the people on here know AND use xbmc. It is the ONLY reason why I even purchased and ipod touch!

oh c'mon, you have a JB section and no BiteSMS? It's the only reason I'm still thinking about JB my iPhone. One of the best app for this phone IMO, one that should be included in the next FW update by Apple :)

Also, there's an official wikipedia app now! And in your list you skipped all the news apps (NYT, WSJ, ESPN or even Eurosport).

Finally, I highly suggest Around me, Tunewiki (which isn't perfect but most of the time it works) and todo. ebay too is ok if you're into auctions.

@mendo: The reasoning was that the RSS reader would cover nyt, wsj, espn, eurosport or pretty much anything else. And as far as the official Wikipedia app goes, we wrote that up a while back, and it's still pretty bad.

Tunewiki's pretty good though, and so is Around Me. Thanks.

AirMouse. I know this is bass-akwards, because most people would rather use a physical keyboard to type on an iPhone, but I use the iPhones international keyboards to type on my computer via AirMouse. It's like having a mini Optimus Maximus- and no matter how slow typing on the iPhone is, it's faster than 1 character a time with character map, or hunt and peck with unlabelled keys.

Most of those don't actually seem in any way essential, save for maybe Routesy (and then only if you live in San Francisco... someone really needs to get up-to-date with a Houston RideMETRO app, posthaste!) and this illustrates the main problem with the App Store. Well, the main problem that isn't there's no satisfactory way to browse for useful content-- virtually every piece of software on the thing is just utter, utter crap with no purpose whatsoever. You wouldn't put this kind of garbageware on your PC or your Macbook, so why do so many of us fill our iPhones and Touches up with this stuff? I'll concede that VNC, Remote, and AirSharing, Fring, and PageOnce (although its security is questionable) are all really useful, and Pandora and Simplify are good fun... but calling any of the rest of this stuff essential is just ridiculous.

SayWho (free) - voice dialing, accurate and great for when you're in the car

Mobile Fotos ($) - full featured unofficial Flickr app

Wikipanion (free) - presents wikipedia data formatted for iPhone

Now Playing (free) - movie times, locations and reviews through rotten tomato or metacritic

I prefer Midomi to Shazam.

Two(three) other essential apps:

1) Facebook or Myspace. Whatever you do

2) Sportacular

Good job with Fring and Airsharing.
