Once again we see family films get slighted. "Speed Racer" had great visuals, but for my money I thought "City of Ember" had outstanding visual effects.

To create an entire community living well past its expiration point was an incredible feat and I think they pulled it off quite nicely. Perhaps they deducted points for the giant mole scenes, though I think those worked well, too.

They did not blow enough shit up to win an oscar for best picture in CCBB. I was ready to leave when BB left his house. To God Damn long! The Dark Knight, Was action packed and entertaining all the way through.I have watched it 5 more times since on DVD. There was no lull. That is Oscar material to me. I left CCBB feeling more or less bored. I will not be renting and ripping the DVD.

@willyboy: I wonder if this is a satirical post depicting the average Joe movie goer who needs to see stuff blowing up in their face every five minutes. At least I hope so. The types that go, "Damn, There Will be Blood is awful! 3 hours of Oil men? Are you serious?"

Iron Man was a great popcorn flick to sit through, but overall it wasn't something I'd consider award-worthy on the special effects end. Benjamin Button was far more impressive, since it was the most realistic. It was obvious what was CGI and what wasn't in IM. The Dark Knight's special effects didn't even matter to me. That was a great crime drama with a great villain, who was far more convincing than Obadiah Stane. I can't believe TDK wasn't even nominated for Best Picture. Comic book movies and fantasy generally gets the short end of the stick. LOTR was a good exception, as was The Incredibles when Brad Bird won Best Director ( I can't remember others).

@Kaiser-Machead: I agree. DK was better than some of the movies that were nominated for best picture. But you know a comic book film would never win.

LOTR took three tries, btw. Maybe Batman 3?

I agree about WALL-E. Surprisingly good Sci-Fi not even considered. It's really a shame.

Kung Fu Panda was awesome (to me) and Bolt was passable, but neither were what I'd consider award worthy. Both played off of very familiar themes. WALL-E was totally different.

Iron man had the best special effects, but The Dark Knight was a better made movie. There weren't nearly as many special effects used, most of the stuff was real. I thought for sure TDK would win best picture (maybe just my own hopes) but it didn't even get nominated?! I'm tired of these touchy feely movies always winning that category. Granted, No Country For Old Men was amazing, it was still a very bleak movie.

@Tariq Ismael: That's really all it takes to make an Oscar worthy movie: Bleakness.

Just make a bleak movie, or a bleakly heartwarming movie, or a heartwarmingly bleak movie, and you'll nominated for sure.

Ironman on a technical level had higher / better special effects. And there should be a No for the second poll. Not everyone was giddy over the new Batman. It was good, dont get me wrong but talk about hype over someones death.

@imTheKing: I vote for Button. Until I read the Gizmodo article, I thought it was some old guy with makeup. That's the point of visual effects - to create believable illusions.

i don't think iron man's effects were very special at all. using CG to animate a solid, unflexible surface is old, old news. animating a soft, human face is technically amazing.

@willyolio: But Iron Man is more of a "Wow!" effects. It takes something that doesn't exist in real life and be able to put it into picture. Sure button may be more believable, but it's not visually enabling. They could have just hired an old man to do the job. I mean, if they did a realistic visual effects of an apple and people bite into it and it just looks so real, then what's the point of doing CG? Why not just use a real apple?

Everybody knows that Best Visual Effects is all about the eye candy, and I think Iron Man fits the bill better.
