I'm just surprised that we haven't heard about Blackwater or similar companies offering up their services to these shipping companies. With the action in Iraq on the wane, that's what I'd do. (If, you know, I were in charge.)
I think the real question would be where I can get my hands on those red overalls that can be worn sans shirt.
they also seem to be loving their careers. I know I would be if I were them. Time to submit an application with my experiencing pirating digital information...how much different could it be?
@discounteggroll: Screw the overalls, I want that pilot cap w/the boom mike the pirate in the bow of the runabout has on. That's just all flavors of awesome. Even if they got away w/nothing but that cap, I'd consider it a victory!
You would really think people would start equipping their ships with some weapons to defend themselves... I'd totally have fun hunting them down cause I'm sure as hell sure those voyages across the sea can get pretty boring. Who doesn't want to start gunning down some pirates?
@newdeepdan: Though this was initially my stance, I've accepted that this may just raise the likelihood of loss of life, rather than being a good preventative measure of being taken siege by pirates. They're armed with rocket launchers and assault rifles, so opening fire will only cause a deadly firefight, and and considerable damage to the ship when rocket-propelled explosives are involved.
It's cheaper and safer to keep them unarmed, as unfortunate a dilemma this puts them in. Ultimately, the matter needs much deeper involvement from the government(s) in Africa, not just shooting at pirates in the ocean.
With the billions of dollars that goes into the equipment from some of the largest shipping concerns in the world, you'd think that they could get some armed personnel aboard. O wells.
@Kaiser-Machead: But, I suppose that despite the fact that these people are more extensively trained than your average retail clerk, supplying either with weapons poses similar risk of loss of life, since there would be a firefight instead of just a hostile takeover without a single fatal blow.
Makes me wonder if it is too expensive to have a small security team aboard with weapons or it is just too big of a risk to give weapons to crew members....hmmm because I haven't heard of a crew fighting off pirates. They just kind of accept it and wait until someone pays
@robokasey: Doubtful. Here in Downtown Manhattan, we have armed security in some of the more critical financial centers, of course mostly police armed with higher powered weapons.
@tok3ninja: Anything in recent history happen that should make us question the trustworthiness of the Navy? There's always going to be careless assholes in the armed services. That's just part of what it means to be human, but this seems like it needs a bit of an explanation.
@robokasey: Many port of calls have prohibition about weapons being on board ships. I mean, how would you feel if a ship docked in Port Newark, or NYC and the crew was armed w/50cals and M-16s?
Those sailors probably have really boring jobs (sitting in a ship for weeks?) and are going to get paid anyway. It doesn't seem like they would have much to be upset about. Plus, being Ukraninan, they have no natural fear of death or violence - just don't take their vodka.
@bflorin: There's no one out there to really go after them. NATO isn't going to resolve the issue, and the pirates speed along on boats that often dock with a larger faster vessel. With the large sums of money that they've been getting from ransoms, they can probably buy large boats and ships from anywhere, as well as weapons.
@Hello Mister Walrus: Agreed. Have the ransom dropped off by a helicopter gunship. Once the pirates leave, whack 'em. You've already written off the money anyways, so why not?
@EBone: I don't know much about it, but I get the feeling that there might be a complication that makes it not so likely, though it would be cool/funny as hell.
This photo was taken after the US navy requested to check the captives' health and welfare. I'm sure the smiles are completely genuine, and not forced by any means.
