@Cliff_Dangers: Personally I think it best that they stay quiet. Less car noise pollution in the city would be welcome. Used to live on an Island in China called Xiamen. They have a law forbidding the use of car horns. I'd like to see that added as well.
@Cliff_Dangers: Banning car horns is a bit too much, there is a definite need to call attention to the drones of zombies walking and driving around. I do agree with banning car horns for non-essential purposes - mainly car alarms.
On my motorcycle, I have found even a modified horn gets ignored, so I generally open the throttle in bursts. An artificial engine noise may get noticed (as a threat?) even easier.
In other news, if my car could make any sound in the world, that sound would be me, shouting:
FUCK YOU ALL! I HATE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU COCK-SUCKERS AND I HOPE YOU GET SOME HIDEOUS VENEREAL DISEASE AND SPEND THE REST OF YOUR WORTHLESS LIVES CLAWING AT YOUR GENITALS! I'LL SEE YOU ALL IN HELL, FUCKERS! GO CHOKE ON A DICK!
Come to think of it - all I need is a bullhorn strapped to the top of my car hooked up to a tape player on loop. Does anyone know where I can buy a bullhorn for my car?
The frakkin' Hasidic Jews in Williamsburg who wear all black from head-to-toe, have big black beards and big black hats, and then CROSS THE STREET AT POORLY LIT INTERSECTIONS AGAINST THE LIGHT!
I have nothing wrong with other peoples' religions or observance thereof. But I'm pretty sure that YHWH didn't say that it's okay for the Chosen People to do dumb shit like play Invisible Pedestrian.
How's this sound: We drivers will obey our laws and pedestrians obey their laws. I keep a good enough lookout for people regardless of religion, race, handicap, or whatever, not to hit them with my car. All I ask is that people cross with the light or if traffic permits, that they keep a lookout for traffic, and that they only cross at the corners.
If people will only cross at the corners then I will only drive on the street.
@OMG! Ponies!: Ugh tell me about it. I once took a nice night ride (with my light of course) and was coming up that stretch of Marcy Ave that comes along from Flushing onto Division, and people pop out of nowhere from between parked cars and everything. Not to mention many like to crawl across corners in their Honda Odysseys at red lights. Sweet fancy Jebus.
The car should be equipped with a transmitter, which transmits a tone to a receiver, which can be mounted inside the blind man's cane or worn around the neck, that emits the appropriate amount of noise depending on the proximity of the vehicle.
See? Simple, and respectful of other people's desire not to hear your damn pipes.
I'm confused. Will the car sound like an electric jet engine or Tangerine Dream? Personally, I'd like to drive something that played ambient music, and powered by sunshine and rainbows, but I doubt that's what the clip meant.
What an American thing to say...it lacks aural balls of a V8. Is it entirely necessary for the car to be obnoxiously loud and gargling. I'll trade a nice sounding gas guzzling V8 engine for something that won't destroy the earth as we know it.
Now, that being said..is it too much to ask for an inexpensive cool looking electric car?
@collectiveego: Hearing a V8 is a lot less annoying then listening to one of those whiney 4 bangers with a coffee can sized exhaust pipe. It just sounds like an can full of angry hornets buzzing away...
@collectiveego: After visiting the UK, I have to say that a lot of the cars there, particularly the compacts, have noisy little 4 pots in them. I'd say most V8 cars here don't have a very big exhaust note unless it has some aftermarket goodie to make it sound that way, whereas that raspy diesel noise seems to be stock affair.
We're not talking about some spikey haired kid in a Civic..the cars are just quiet and the car does not have a tailpipe because its electric.
And since when is aesthetics a technology and why would it be lacking? It's clear that the entire auto industry is capable of at least making a car look good. The electric side...I get it..but come on..make em look cool. The Tesla looks great but its still mad expensive. If the Prius looked like the Tesla, we would all have one.
I never understood that part in the movie with the car. Do they not realize how much air that vehicle had to displace in order to float up into the air like that? Imagine a helicopter but with tiny propellers that had to push out 3 to 4 times the amount of air. Everyone and everything below that car would have been blown away.
@Noobs-R-Us: Assuming that its using air displacement to rise off the ground.
Maybe it uses magnetic fields and the sound is the generator spinning up and the smoke is coolant discharge.
Never try applying current principles to science fiction. Did you sit through the whole thing saying that inefficiencies in cloning would of rendered the whole idea of replicants economically infeasible?
@Noobs-R-Us: It doesn't need to displace that much air when the vehicle itself can change its mass properties using dark energy to a weight of a feather.
Yet, it will still look like crap. If they really cared about the environment they wouldn't make them look so shitty so that people will actually want to buy them.
I think this concern about the lack of engine noise coming from an electric/hybrid is absurd. Yet another consequence of the nanny state trying to protect people from their own stupidity. Next thing you know we'll all be wearing cowbells around our necks to make sure that people aren't startled when we come around a corner.
@weatherman: I disagree. Ever been near a slow-moving hybrid in a noisy environment? You can't hear them coming. Decades of internal combustion cars have trained us to listen for that noice when crossing the street or walking through a parking lot. This is a good safety feature. Did you notice that trucks have back-up beepers? Is that stupid too?
@weatherman: In an abstract way it is very absurd. In an automobile-maker-in-a-litigious-society kinda way it makes perfect sense. My hope is that EV's become commonplace and this sort of thing becomes unnecessary.

Yes, because our current technology is not good enough yet.
