Blockbuster is so mired in the brick-and-mortar rental paradigm that they were already dead in the water as a rent-by-mail option. This review of their feeble and awkward attempts at digital distribution just puts the nail in the coffin.

I did a trial subscription of their mail-based DVD rentals (a la Netflix) and the experience was absolutely dismal. Their website is horribly structured and their list of movies and new releases is absolutely horrible and sparse. Add to that the fact that nearly 75% of their latest releases have waiting periods of anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 or 4 months before you'll get your disc (yet amazingly you'll still be paying them).

Everything about Blockbuster is a complete waste of time and effort, and I would never entertain even the vaguest notion of giving them any of my business.

@ultimpsycho: When you have one within a five minute walking distance, it's a much more appealing prospect then netflix.

I used to think so. I had the Blockbuster Movie Pass. I could get 2 movies a day if I wanted. It was awesome.

But, after I had watched everything from my Blockbuster store... I quickly switched to Netflix because they had MUCH more content available.

My Blockbuster barely had any DVDs of TV shows at all... plus their meager collection of back-catalog titles. In contrast, Netflix has EVERY DVD ever made.

Even though Blockbuster has improved their mail-order rentals, plus the option to bring it back to a store to exchange it... I've just stopped going to video stores all together. Since I would never go into a Blockbuster store anyway... so I'll stick with Netflix.

I do, however, reserve new releases in a Red Box. It's a dollar! But I use Netflix for everything else.

@srdailey: I didn't know my mailbox could give me another movie when I drop mine off.

I used Blockbuster Online. You know, the service that's just like netflix except I could trade in a movie right there for a new one. Hence my point.

@MichaelScrip: While I will say Netflix is amazing with their content, I was just fine using Blockbuster Online and the in-store trade option.

Well, that was until I could watch netflix movies on my 360.

@Theoutlet: Oh yeah the service that keeps going up in price(except for a few lucky people who get grandfathered on every price hike) and lowering the amount of monthly trades and still doesn't have a comparable selection.

"You can't fault 2Wire for any issues with the hardware." How are you so sure that it wasn't the hardware causing the choppy playing?

@mares: Yeah, that's true. That comment was written before I tested HD streaming and not revised out. It's now being adjusted.
