wow, reading these comments reinforces that apple fans don't have false senses of entitlement or superiority at all.
You aren't cool or part of the elite because you own a phone that anyone with $200 to their name can buy. If you wanted a status symbol, you should have bought a vertu.

@frigg: He never said the iPhone cost $200. He said: "You aren't cool or part of the elite because you own a phone that anyone with $200 to their name can buy." If you only have $200 to your name you wouldn't be able to afford the sales tax on the iPhone, so he's obviously not talking about the iPhone. Unless he bought it at the Base Exchange, in which case, $200 could buy you an iPhone if they only cost $199.
But then again, I've never purchased a phone for $199, so I probably have no idea what you're talking about. ;c)
@aerospaceman: The best thing that happened to the iPhone is it lost its status as a status symbol. The first iPhone, with its high price and relative rarity was a status symbol, something that would turn heads and was almost an embarrassment to use in public. Now that they are becoming common and don't say anything about the person using it, they're a million times better.
Anyone who has an iPhone (or any piece of technology) should only have it because they like what it does, not because they want it to influence how others perceive them.
Frankly, knowing that iPhones are sold in Wall-Marts makes me that much more comfortable the next time I take out my iPhone in Buckingham Palace and start playing Koi when the Queen starts blathering on about her garden or china collection or whatnot.
@aerospaceman: I don't think you understand communism. If anything, the iPhone represents capitalism. [en.wikipedia.org]
The iPhone may have been a status symbol, but that value was diluted a long time ago. Stop whining about the great unwashed masses having iPhones. It's untimely, elitist, and naive.

@Number_41: You don't count yourself as one of the masses who follow fads. Because the iPhone is popular, you will not buy it. You believe that this makes you an iconoclast who does not let popular opinion sway your behavior.
There's a problem with that logic. You are still following the crowd, only you're doing the opposite.
I suspect that this is your reasoning because, as CokeInABottle points out, you aren't buying a BlackBerry or PALM, both of whom make comparable products and are also relatively popular.

@hyewarrior: I'm guessing next year Wal-Mart will spend a little $$ and get over their fear of Unions enough to contact the local FOP's or PBA's and get some off duty cops to provide uniformed security. I said it before, but ten cops could have stopped that whole ugly incident, as crushing a cop carried more of a penalty than crushing a greeter.

To everyone that will get the chance to buy an iphone at Walmart: good for you.
To everyone that doesn't care, whether they use an iphone or not: You wanna grab a beer?

You'd have a point, except the iPhone costs $199, NOT $200.
If you've never paid $199 for a phone before, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. [sigh]

Apple apparently taking the Monty Burns approach and guaranteeing a healthy mix of the rich and the ignorant.
Enjoy.
