How about a more practical name? Let's see. It's primary purpose is to confer HD content to people... DVD is a nice, familiar label that people know... how about HD-DVD?

Most people, even those who use computers every day, are apparently so terrified of them that they lose half their IQ when in the presence of one.

Let's point out the obvious, I'm your standard Blu-ray user. Here's my setup
Samsung 67inch LED DLP - $2100
Pioneer Elite VSX-94TXH - $1600
4 Aperion Audio Intimus 533-PT Powered Tower Speakers - $550 each
1 Aperion Audio Intimus 634-VAC Center Channel Speaker - $400
160GB PS3 - $499
Wires and Cables - $200
Plus an Xbox 360, a Wii, and a Mac Mini.
Point is this, if you can afford a normal home theater setup, you're not bitching and whining about $20. Seriously, don't be one of the clueless peons who buys a Mercedes, then slaps on Les Schwab radials and Jiffy Lube oil changes.

As for the price of the movies, well, let me answer that with story time. 10 years or more ago, I bought my first DVD player. It was a Panasonic deck, pre-progressive scan era. The first two movies I got were The Fifth Element, and Robocop. Robocop was $25, and Fifth Element was $30.
So yeah, your point about the price of media is moot. People will buy it, like everything else, if they want it.

Or they just bought a PS3, as I did in December of 2006. Still current for Blu-ray specs and should remain so into the future due to updatable firmware.

@Sir Gibler: I think there is a Pioneer player that gets better reviews for having a few extra features, but I think that one is also close to $1000. Then again, with firmware updates, there is also a chance that the PS3 could eventually support the few codecs that it doesn't support right now.
@MudkipPPC: Welcome to Desolate Tatsumairi: And for those of us who actually have a nice sound system with HDMI passthrough, there is the ability to play SACD. Honestly, though, except to play Katamari, I haven't played any PS2 games on the PS3 and I don't own any SACDs because I just recently found out that the older PS3s have SACD playback.

Agree, i wanted to show my Grandma the beauty of Casino Royale but she only has a dvd player, and i don't want to do a lot of converting and then burn it.
It should've had backwards compatibility somehow, i think that thats a huge reason why it's not doing as well as it could , even though its doing well.
But at least anyone with a ps3 can play it!

With the laptop solution, most Blu Ray movies come out with Digital Copies nowadays.

Indeed. I just got The Matrix on BR the other day and it came with a digital copy. Which IMO is pointless when I can just download (or make) a nice h.264 copy at full res.
Illegal? Maybe. But since I've paid for the movie, my conscience is clear.
