Thanks for using one of my [jalexartis] pictures of my adaptation to protect my iPhone 3GS from rain. I've done so for 3 of my 7 cycles. See more at my blog: http://tinyurl.com/kuq4ar or my flickr photoset: http://tinyurl.com/mw3azx.
In my area tap water is ok. You can drink it and it doesn't taste bad. But there are enough regions where you can't drink it. That whole reducing 'carbon footprint' thing still has me sceptical though.
Bottled water will always win. Sure a carton may be better for the EARTH, but bottles are better for PEOPLE.
With bottled water you can open/shut it, not have to worry about it flipping over and spilling (with the lid on, of course) and you can easily carry it around (ie: the mesh holders on backpacks).
@ttech10: That's because the Tropicana cartons only come in 1/2 gallon sizes. When was the last time you saw anybody carrying around 1/2 gallon of orange juice?
I'm sorry but a lot of urban area tap water is freaking horrendous tasting. Which basically means you need to install a damn water filter. So, $5 a week on bottles you can take to work w/ you, or $10 on a bottle to drag with you, and a few grand for the filtration system + ongoing maint costs.
LIKE WINE: I age my tap drinking water. I let it breath for a couple of days. This gives time for the chlorine to dissipate. Tastes great! Save $$$! No problem.
On an only somewhat-related note, do you suppose our attempt to get away from plastic bottles has anything to do with China no longer wanting our trash?
I am no expert, but from what I understand the most sizable percentage of carbon emissions comes from shipping the product - not from the plastic bottle. No question, if you have to pick between boxed water and bottled water, at least the box and bio-degrade in less than a million years. Still, if the idea is to help our planet, bottled water is 'really bad' and this product is just plan 'bad'.
puh-leaze... Where are you living, in the Congo? The U.S. and Canada have the cleanest, more sterile water in the world. Be it UV irradiation, chlorination, or other methods, no one else tops our fastidious treatment of water.
@Shamoononon thinks twitter sucks: Tap water has stricter regulations in place than bottled water (which has very little regulation). Your argument could just as easily be reversed.
@Shamoononon thinks twitter sucks: Water quality is very location-specific. I love the tap version where I live now, but when I was in school the local golf course had a sign warning of the high arsenic content in their water traps. I didn't drink the tap water there.
Hey, if this square water container brings about an end to Fiji water, I'm all for it. I swear every time i see a Fiji bottle I think about punching the people that buy it.
@Darrone: Yeah I'm with the others. I hate to admit it, but on the rare occasions that I buy bottled water, Fiji is the only bottled water I'll buy. It's delicious.
@Darrone: Fiji water. Imported from fricking FIJI. That's near Australia! Twice as far away as Hawaii! Yet it's brought by boat or plane to the corner store in New York City, 8000 miles away. Eight Thousand Miles.

Being on a campus with ~25,000 people, I have NEVER seen the carton but see the bottles all the time.

I just bought a fridge with AWESOME water capabilities to STOP BUYING WATER!!
Sure I'm buying filters now, but CRUSHED ICE PEOPLE.
CRUSHED ICE!!!!

Less sure about the crushed ice people. It sounds like a good way to solve a dangerous problem, but I can't say that I love it in quite the same way.
I also love that you are back commenting more regularly.
It will take me some time to decide which I love more.
...
Yeah, sorry, I think it's the crushed ice.

I didn't realize I had become less than regular.
(Maybe more fiber.)
I built a new computer recently, so it's very likely I'm engrossed in Bioshock or something, I dunno.

If you're in NYC for example, it's arguably "better" to eat olives from Italy than radishes from Ohio.
Which is not to say that I don't agree that it's relatively absurd and prefer to drink my water from the NYC tap.

(But mostly because if you do, the bag will break and the water will end up on the floor.)
