Saw this on TV a very long time ago. It was on Discovery or Science Channel or something like that. It was an inventor's show. They help people invent their idea.
This was invented by a couple. They took the idea to the show, and the show showed the engineering of it, all the crazy early prototypes and they even had a group focused on what to name it and a group that marketed it (to Bed Bath & Beyond). It's a pretty cool show.
Hmmm... I wish society were such that besides football players, people were compensated for their rankings in the Putnam competition, or for having academic papers published in reputable journals.
@booo: They are, just not much at the undergraduate level since the supply is so large. I certainly didn't pay a cent out-of-pocket for my PhD. The distinction is that I also earned take-home pay and could take up secondary employment if I so desired (as long as it wasn't a direct conflict with the research contract's sponsor)
In many science and engineering fields paying your own graduate tuition is looked down upon as an indication that you weren't involved in any good research.
@radarskiy: Ok, obviously you'd get a stipend for enrolling in a PhD program. You'd be an idiot to pay through 4+ years of graduate school. The point I'm trying to make is, society does not value academia as much as it should. Lots of my friends have entered PhD programs to be college professors. Over our lifetimes, I will make many times more $$$ than they will. I am not smarter than them and will not contribute as much to society as they will, yet society rewards me more. I don't think I'm the only one who will conclude that the incentive system is messed up.
Yeah, where did this debate over basketball players and soccer come from?
However, in response to your little rant, I do remember Basketball players getting into a brawl. While you don't see them headbutting each other, you do see them take out fans.

You dont see basketball players head-butting each other.
You see them screaming after a dunk but not sure that counts. And Baseball, please. Don't get me started with tennis.
Oh and heres a pic you might have expected.
