How many do you have, and how many is too many?

Long ago, we started worrying that the death of the physical movie format would not mean a time of peaceful media-less homogeneity but an infinite format war of subscriptions, separate collections and logins. Today, it's come true.

I've only got an Xbox 360, PS2 (sometimes you just need a little Sly Cooper, nah mean?), and a Roku, but others on staff have all three current-gen consoles, Blu-ray players, HTPCs and all kinds of other things—so where does it stop? How many is too many?

<![CDATA[MacBook Boxes Make a Great Dresser]]> Apple packaging is so pretty, it's kind of a shame to throw it out. If you can collect enough boxes, one option would be to create a handsome bureau like the one pictured here.

Unless you go about acquiring these boxes by purchasing a bunch of MacBooks, this would be a fairly cheap piece of furniture—kind of like those cardboard dressers you had as a kid. Remember those? Man, those things sucked. [Imageshack Thanks Brian / Kristin!]

<![CDATA[Apple Ships Mini DisplayPort Adapter In Huge MacBook-Sized Box]]> Speaking of Mini DisplayPort, here's another entry from Apple in the shipping hall of shame. They're shipping the five-inch Mini-DiplayPort-to-DVI adapter in a box that's bigger than the MacBook's. Check out the waste.

As Kevin notes, it might seem nitpicky, but when you compare this to how much Apple boasts on the MacBook's green packaging, it is kind of jarring:

"The new MacBook packaging is up to 41 percent smaller than the previous generation. And smaller boxes are much better for the planet. Because smaller boxes mean we can fit more boxes on each shipping pallet — up to 25 percent more. Which means more products will fit on each boat and plane. Which means fewer boats and planes are used, resulting in fewer CO2 emissions. It’s just one seemingly minor change. But it has a major positive impact on our environment."

Surely they've got a smaller box lying around somewhere. If not, we hope they transition all of their shipping boxes to a greener variation—not just to align them with Apple's own standards and goals, but to set an example for the rest of the industry. [jkOnTheRun]

<![CDATA[Dell's Wasteful Shipping Habits Take a Steamy Dump on the Environment]]> There are few practices as stupid, simple and damaging to the environment as wasteful packing. Take a look at this ludicrous box that Dell used to send a 2GB thumb drive. It's about 100 times too big, and it's not just wasteful because of the cardboard used. I, for one, am sick of seeing crap like this.

Such idiotic shipping practices also waste space on trucks and planes, requiring more trips, therefore more fuel used and more pollution. And it's not like this is something that we haven't seen Dell do before. Think about it: how many thumbdrives could fit in a UPS truck in boxes like these? What about if they were in boxes that were sized more appropriately? There would be a huge difference. And with most online retailers shipping like this, it's a problem that could be easily solved.

Let's shame them into changing. Next time you receive a tiny object shipped in a gigantic box, snap a picture of it and send it to me. Nothing helps change harmful policies like a healthy dose of bad press. [Consumerist via Treehugger]

<![CDATA[Green Holiday Project: Make a Computer Box Reindeer]]> If you get a new computer for Christmas, you're probably SOL on timing, since it'll be about time to pack up the holiday fa-la-la-la junk, but you could always make a computer box deer to shoot in your backyard, especially if you hate your computer company.

The reindeer's admittedly square, squat and deflicted, but you could slender it up by using a different style of box, and if you have a small child they'll probably get a kick out of it anyway because they usually love boxes. Actually, I still love playing with boxes, it's half the reason I get excited when Fedex shows up at my door. [Instructables]

<![CDATA[Gold Wedding Ring Box Has 2-inch LCD, Plays Video]]> As the married editors of Gizmodo can vouch for, when you ask your wife to marry you she's not going to remember anything about the box the ring comes in, just the ring itself. However, this ring box has a 2-inch LCD that can play back 60 minutes of video or 500 photos, which means you can present her with both a ring and naked pictures/video of her to enhance the mood. With this Euricase Multimedia Ring Box you can be sure your lady knows to judge a book by its (tacky, tacky) cover as well as its contents. Best of all, you can keep on using the ring as an alarm clock and a calendar! You win forever! [Euricase via Everything USB via Oh Gizmo]

<![CDATA[How to Comment: Boxes]]> I decided that yesterday was the day that I would clean out all the boxes from my apartment. Imagine getting multiple packages every day for months on end. That's a lotta boxes. So I spent the whole night breaking them down and watching the season finale of 24. What a letdown that was! At least they cleaned up the whole plot mess to give the next season a clean start. More Jack Bauer, less lousy romantic plotlines.

Speaking of mess, I've got a gadget review for tomorrow that makes it easy for you to find stuff even if your home's messy. It's pretty neat.

Want to comment? Here's how:

1) Choose a post, click on it, and scroll to the bottom.

2) Click "New User? Here's what to do."

3) Fill in the comment, choose a username and password (the one you want to use for your eventual comment account), and hit "Submit."

4) Refresh the page to see if your comment shows up. If it hasn't within a day or two, try again with a less messy comment.

<![CDATA[PS3 Box is One Huge Biotch]]> We've known the PS3 is pretty damn big, but this box is ridiculously huge.

At least the homeless folks will be able to ditch their refrigerator boxes for the PS3 boxes. Or maybe this is just a scheme to gouge the Christmas wrapping paper market.
