Use Lye To Deal With Dead Relatives, Unclog Drains

Forget those GPS graves in the jungle we brought you a few weeks ago, because in the future what we're really going to do is pour—yes pour—our loved ones down the drain with the help of some lye and an iron coffin contraption from BioSafe Engineering. The last hurdle, as always, will be to overcome the yuck factor many people experience when they realize this really does mean turning mom and pops into coffee syrup.

Letter from a Moto Insider: How Stupid Execs Ran Moto Into the Ground

Geoffrey Frost was Motorola's Chief Marketing Officer, and the RAZR was his baby. Last month, we got a letter from his former personal adviser, Numair Faraz, written to current Motorola CEO Greg Brown about how a cabal of inept, out-of-touch executives more worried about their golf score than the company drove once mighty Moto into the ground. It got lost in our bloated inbox, but with Moto splitting up today, Engadget reminded us we had it. For anyone wondering what the hell happened to Moto, with its endless string of RAZR knockoffs and crappy handsets, it's a must-read:
I've always considered it Motorola's dirty little secret that the strategy for their entire profit machine was run by the company's CMO—not the rest of the company's executives, who are as inept now as they have ever been. Many close to Geoffrey believed Ed Zander worked him to death, putting the pressure of the fate of the company in his hands.
That's just a touch. More »

Motorola Gifts Personalized Copies of Its ROKR E8 to Oscar Nominees

Just like they did at last year's ceremony, Motorola is gifting 2008's Oscar nominees with personalized versions of its as-yet-unreleased ROKR E8.
Yeah, yeah, you probably think we are turning into a celebrity website, but, given the past few weeks of will they, won't they? speculation as to whether they are getting out of the handset market, this announcement means, IMO, one thing. More »

iWalk is So Much More than Just a Prosthetic Foot

A group of MIT and Brown researchers and engineers have debuted a prosthetic foot that propels the user forward using "tendon-like springs and an electric motor," meaning it is even more like the real thing than traditional prostheses. Professor Hugh Herr, head of biomechatronics at MIT's Media Lab, and a double amputee himself, tested the device, describing it as "wild—like you're on one of those moving walkways in the airport." 3GSM Telecom Conference in Barcelona = iPhoneClone Launchpad

3GSM was a show I'd always been happy to cover from afar. It's not that I didn't want to visit Barcelona, of course. It's just that the news had always been less than spectacular for me, so It was a hard trip to justify to the bosses. This year, things are turning out to be more interesting than usual.

Zune's Brown Color Sucks, Analyst Says

Microsoft marketing geniuses figured out that brown is the new black (or white), painting up the Zune in a color that a lot of people associate with a brick of shit. Now here come the second-guessing analysts, and one named Rob Enderle from the Enderle Group says that Microsoft stands alone in its edgy choice of brown as a hot new color. Is brown cool? "No other hardware company has come to that conclusion," he said, blaming the color for the player's somewhat slow intro. More »

Plastic Battery Breakthrough: 100x Today's Alkaline Cells

It's about time we had a battery breakthrough, and researchers at Brown University say their plastic battery produces 100 times the power of today's alkaline cells. The technology combines the power surging capabilities of a capacitor with the storage characteristics of conventional batteries. The result is a battery that can be charged quickly but at the same time can deliver its energy over an extended period. It's versatile, too. Inventors Tayhas Palmore and Hyun-Kon Song explained how the composite material used to build the batteries is a virtual shape shifter. Said Palmore:
"You start thinking about this polymer and you start thinking that you can create batteries everywhere out of it. You could wrap cell phones in it or electronic devices. Conceivably, you could even make fabric out of this composite."
The next problem to be solved is the batteries' decreased storage capacity after they've been repeatedly recharged. No word on when the technology might find its way to market. More »

Why the Da Vinci Code is Full of It

Amidst all the chatter—"Jesus wasn't divine and slept with the ladies," "Tom Hanks has bad hair"—very few people were brave enough to bring up the real issues in Dan Brown's smash best seller, The Screenplay for the Da Vinci Code Movie. Brown, it seems, doesn't know anything about technology, biology, or art. More »
