@pretsal: I believe he actually used his finger, if you can assume the New Yorker article is being literal calling it "finger painting". And that actually is more than possible; I've used Brushes and it is (or can be) completely finger-driven. That said, there is an optional capacitive touch stylus one can get, the Pogo Sketch from Ten One Design, about $15 and easily well worth the investment.

I have the stylus, it is nice, much more control than just using a finger, although there is something quite satisfying about using only your finger to paint. However, do be careful not to tilt the Pogo Sketch too far toward horizontal as the metal ferrule around the spongy tip can scratch into your iPhone's surface--at least on mine, where I have one of those clear "mylar" shield thingies on the glass, it did manage to scratch the shield. Lesson learned.

Loved the funny about the 93 year old editor with the monocle. Happily the editor in charge of covers is sprightly 50-something Francoise Mouly, whose long experience in comix (she's Art Spiegelman's wife, was an editor of the classic RAW etc.) has made her NYer cover picks far from fusty.

It's a very nice illustration, iPhone or not (and let's face it, it's just PR).

@bosskev: Agreed, after looking at @MINI Driver: profile, there seems to be a pattern of comments... I.E.

Swoon for apple/mac

Disparage ms/windows

call someone an idiot for having their own opionion

disparage ms some more

end with some impressive apple statistic

I don't get it. It's like a f&@#ing fanboy haiku! I LOVE apple products. I have a first gen iphone, and a macbook pro 15inch (sadly only with the core duo) which just took a shat unfortunately, and had a G4 prior to that. I also have an HP DV5 which I love for everything my mac products don't do. Moral is, both companies DO bring something to the table. If someone likes MS better, just leave them to their own opinion and preference.

On a higher note, Mini's are pretty cool cars..

(you see that's called being nice to people)

That this has happened, while an enormous achievement and milestone, is not completely surprising to me. Artists have been using the iPhone for many months now as a sort-of "mini-Wacom Cintiq tablet" (itself considered the gold standard of drawing tablets for digital artists).

@everybodyl: Having just tried it for myself, I would assume he was using the free Mac OS X app Brushes Viewer, which does a whole hella lot more than just view. It lets you take any iPhone/Brushes-created art and not only see it as it was created, stroke by stroke, it also somehow upscales these lilliputian art pieces into hi-res very, very effectively using a methodology that I can only ascribe to magic.

@bosskev: Oh, and the Brushes Viewer app (TERRIBLY misnamed, if I may say so, given all it does) includes several sample pieces of finished Brushes art so, even if you don't have an iPhone, you can still see how it all works.

@robot-shmobot: Its deffinatley not vector, its too detailed. Something like that would crash the iphone if it was in vector, although if it was pixel it would crash it too.

@twilight-arc: That's what I'm guessing. I mean, the Brushes app apparently is not recording just pixels, it seems to be recording the actual strokes. Converting to hi-res must be taking these strokes, aka vectors, and reinterpreting them for a larger file size.

@Kicken: Christ. What did people ever do before layers? It's almost like....I dunno....drawing on paper!

Anyway, MS Paint is fun for some pixelated fun, and this app is loads of fun for me to use, though is tricky with just your finger tip.
