The DW-100 takes high-def AVCHD video from your camcorder and burns it to DVD without a computer. It's hard to argue with that.

It can also function as an external burner for any PC or Mac computer. If this works like it should, and Canon markets it properly, a device like this could do well in the current home movie market. It is expected to release in March 2008, but no price has been set. [Akihabara News via Geek Sugar via Crunch Gear]

<![CDATA[Samsung's SH-203N DVD Burner Burns Dual Layer at 16x]]> Samsung's Super-WriteMaster may not be the fastest burner for regular DVD+Rs (Line-Ons can burn 20x too), but its dual-layer burning seems to be tops. Jumping up from an 10-12x found in other burners, the SH-203 has 16x dual-layer burning, along with 20x for DVD+ and -R, 12x DVD-RAM, 8x DVD+RW and 6x DVD-RW. It runs off a SATA interface so make sure your computer was made some time after the second Spider-man movie before picking one up for $79. [Samsung via DigitalTrends]

<![CDATA[Sony Intros 4x Blu-ray Burner For PCs]]> Sony offered details on their updated PC Blu-ray burner today, with 4x speeds that can write 50 GB in 45 minutes. The BWU-200S connects to the motherboard via SATA and will burn HD formats to standard DVD as well. <![CDATA[LaCie Taps Designer Sam Hecht For New Portable Hard Drives, DVD Burners]]> LaCie new line of portable drives are notable for one reason—they were designed by Sam Hecht. The famed industrial designer (Whirlpool, Epson) gave the hard drives, ranging from 30-250 GB, a minimal glossy look, with an end cap that hides the ports and retractable USB cable. The 8X DVD burner sports a similar look and comes with LightScribe technology. LaCie's new offerings are available now starting at $90 for the hard drives and $100 for the DVD burner. <![CDATA[Tripod Burner: Because Tripods Get Hungry, Too]]> Here is another interesting design by Yu-ri Lee. For cooking on the go, why not build the heating element directly into the stand? And a tripod is a simple, folding solution to hold your pan/soon to be ruined camera.

With the level of resources large corporations have at their fingertips, why isn't there more interesting design in everyday products? Just look at the lower right of this diagram - not only can you cook up some hot dinner, but you can fight off hordes of vampires while doing it.

<![CDATA[I-O Data Joins Blu-Ray Burner Party, Only $712]]> I know I can't be the only one looking to blow a handsome sum of money ($712) on something as useful as a Blu-ray burner. Good thing I-O Data will have just what I need once February rolls around. Granted, its burner doesn't do anything that other such burners don't already do (its 2X BD-R/BD-RE read/write speed is in line with other manufacturers' efforts), but it is slightly less expensive than the big guys' offerings. And as soon as you can effectively backup PS3 games (and I can afford a PS3), Blu-ray burners will look all the more attractive.

<![CDATA[HP LightScribe DVD Writers Go 18x]]> HP joins the 18x DVD club with this 18x LightScribe-enabled burner. The DVD940i is the first HP LightScribe drive to go up to 18x, and it also records all DVD and CD formats as well. Hopefully the increased speed means the LightScribe labeling system sped up as well, because as we saw before, it takes multiple burns to get the LightScribe system just right.

<![CDATA[Sony to Ship BWU-100A Blu-ray Burner Next Month]]> Sony has rolled out an internal Blu-ray burner for computers, the BWU-100A, which writes both 25GB and 50GB BD-R and BD-RE (rewritable) disks at 2x speed. The company says a 25GB disk will take 30 minutes to burn at that 2x speed. In addition to those Blu-ray formats, the drive will also be capable of handling most flavors of single-layer and dual-layer DVD+Rs, too.

The BWU-100A will also be able to play back Blu-ray movies, but you'll need an HDCP-compliant graphics card to do that, such as those we told you about from NVidia and Sapphire. Sony says the drive will be available in August, and is reportedly the lowest-priced Blu-ray burner yet, at $750.

<![CDATA[Plextor PX-B900A Blu-ray Burner]]> Now that big names like Samsung and Sony have their Blu-ray burners out, it's time for the smaller guys like Plextor to jump in the party. Plextor's planning to ship their new Blu-ray burner in September, supporting 2x write and both 25GB and 50GB discs. It writes also standard and dual-layer DVDs along with CDs.

No price yet, but our guess is it'll be cheaper than Sony's. Finally, no more swapping burned porn DVDs in and out!

<![CDATA[Samsung WriteMaster SH-S182D 18x DVD Burner]]> Samsung's throws out the world's first 18x DVD writer—16x was the previous high—to the glee of impatient people worldwide. The WriteMaster can write standard DVDRs at 18x, DVD-RAM at 12x, DVD Dual Layer at 8x, DVD+RW at 8x and DVD-RW at 6x. With the Blu-ray and HD DVD burners up in the way-too-much range, a new DVD Burner should tide you over until the next-gen becomes the current-gen.

Available later this month for $69.99.

Update: We should have read the press release all the way through. The actual claim was "SAMSUNG BREAKS SPEED BARRIER WITH THE WORLD'S FIRST 18X REWRITABLE DVD DRIVE TO SUPPORT 12X DVD-RAM RECORDING". So they're the first 18x that also has 12x DVD-RAM support, not the first 18x overall.
