This is why it wouldn't work in america: The put it in a very nice, low-crime, white neighborhood and it looks good/works out well...people love it. Then the low-class miniority complain that why do they get an awesome fish tank bus stop and they don't. So they put in a fish tank bus stop and it get vandalized, broken. then they take them out all together and no one gets anything.

@BeerManMike: Low-crime areas aren't immune to cruel treatment of animals. I think that these things would be in jeopardy no matter what part of the city you put them in. I've seen spiderweb cracks in the glass of bus stops in "safe" areas. People will not take greater care because the bus stop has a fish tank attached.

The one and only proper life form to display everywhere in a city, is the tree.

Or some random fuckhead might either smash the glass, or put something in there to poison the fish. I was working in a pet shop on Nassau street some years back, and some kid came in and dropped a couple of mothballs into the African cichlid tank. I'm surprised I didn't get fired for tossing him out. I wanted to dunk his head in the tank. If people can be so bold indoors, these animals wouldn't stand a chance out in the open.

Anyway, this is a stupid idea. No one is going to be at a bus stop for hours on end, so an animated aquarium that runs for 10 minutes or so on a continuous loop should do just fine.

@Kaiser-Machead: unless, of course, you have a bus service that comes around every 30 minutes or an hour and is inaccurate to the extremes. But I agree, this is a stupid idea.

@Kyonko: The tank may be observed by transit workers frequently throughout the day, but it'd most certainly be in considerable danger at night.

It's one thing to have public animal displays in a place that's continuously monitored until it's time to shoo the public out, but these things will be constantly accessible.

@BigRocket: In a lot of countries, buses are the preferred way to get around. The US has a terrible public transporation system and the buses here indeed suck (i.e. greyhound).

OH it's a Snake!: Greyhound's a dingy disorganized tub of shit, but it's far more flexible than taking Amtrak, which often has a very limited schedule for where you want to go, and takes a hell of a lot longer than the bus to get somewhere. It is way more comfortable though. I try to go for them whenever I can, but often can only use Greyhound.

Greyhound buses themselves also suck, as they're getting mighty old for the most part. Don't handle well in the snow or rain, tiny uncomfortable seats and they rattle and jolt over every bump in the road. Imagine sitting in one of those things for 7 hours. Yeesh.
