Buy an LG phone. My Env took some amazingly good pics and my Env3 is almost as good, even without the autofocusing lens.

How long would an object like that be in the field of view? And how many pics a second could his cell phone take?

I am also very interested in the super secret gizmodo image analysis. What did you do to determine it was "a real photo"?

Definitely not a sundog as they are stationary and don't "race through the atmostphere".

Ive seen a few absolutely huge "shooting stars" in my day, one was while on vacation in the Carribbean. From start to finish, it took about 5 seconds.

Assuming i had my phone handy, and I was very very quick, its possible to get off a shot I suppose.

that being said, im extremely skeptical.

Not a meteor, It's a sundog with an arch. I'm not a meteorologist, but an astronomer, and have seen many of these. They are caused by ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. Heres a link [en.wikipedia.org]

That is the exact same phone I have been using since last May. It really sucks. It has a 5 megapixel camera, but what they don't tell you is that it won't zoom at 5 megapixels. You have to set it to 3 megapixels to get the zoom function and 2 megapixels to zoom more than one notch. Plus, the lens really sucks and the pictures are always washed out. Also, it's really, really slow to respond to my commands.

@poisonfist: Of course.. I can take a great pic with any crappy camera.. as long as the light is good (and in case of digital, lot's of it) and you can do some touch ups later on.
