I have a Seidio Innocase for my Touch Pro. Doesn't really cover up the design, and I got a color I prefer to the factory colors.

Of course with Zagg selling Invisible Shields that cover the entire device that's probably the way to go if you like the way your phone looks naked.

When I had my MotoQ I didn't have a case for it since it was so thin I could carry it in a pocket (not only that my work slacks have a cell pocket.).

This is exactly what I wanted to see going into 2010. A new company finally stepping up to offer all the features we want in a phone that no one's been courageous enough to give us. Like 3G. And multitouch.

Not to mention Samsung is leading the way into next-generation technobabble. Flash control? WEB control?! Baby, sign me up! Oh, and not to mention, with the Oceanic theme they're going for, teens and young adults the world over will never be without an excuse to sing "I'm on a boat!" The possibilities are endless!

And as if that wasn't enough, they'll be including the TouchWiz interface! As a young man who grew up in the tech generation, I can't tell you how cool TouchWiz sounds. I can't tell people about my phone's TouchWiz. And the multimedia cube! Man, kids are all about the cubes these days. I mean, I saw a Rubik's cube the other day at Wal-Mart......and also there was that cube in the first Transformers. See? They're everywhere!

    This is a good idea.

I'll reserve judgement until I've seen it but it seems to me the last thing the mobile community needs is another "open" OS. This is a contrarian move by Samsung.

I don't use one for my phone as it's a semi dumb phone with a small screen. Therefore I don't really care what happens to it so long as it remains usable. It's also a slider so a case would just make it awkward. I do have a brand new iPod Touch which I keep in a nice leather belkin case. When your device is essentially one big fragile screen you want to keep that intact. Especially if you plan on watching anything on it.

It's silly to believe that nothing can happen to it as long as you take care of it or to believe you'll never drop it. Screw design, I prefer to protect my investments.

Plus I pointed this out in the last anti-case rant put forth by Jesus. The best thing is to simply buy a GOOD LOOKING case. It doesn't have to be ugly to be protective. Nothing like having a sexy leather bound gadget.

WebOS, iPhone OS, and Android are all *NIX with HTML and Javascript on top. Except for Windows Mobile, most of the smartphone market has some form of *NIX / Java blend.

VMware would really shake things up if it blurred the barriers of hardware. I don't think the carriers will go for it, though. Handset vendors won't care as much, except Apple, whose whole game is "the total user experience" anyway.

@Jack_Burton: While webOS and Android run on top of the Linux kernel and iPhone OS is Darwin (way waaay down), this doesn't mean they're compatible. As far as I'm aware, none of them are Posix compliant, they all run completely different toolchains and userlands, and apps are written in JavaScript on webOS, Java on Android and Objective-C on iPhone.

    (nb Java != JavaScript)

@QuarterToTomorrow: I never said they were compatible, just that they had similar components in their underlying architecture. Have you ever used VMWare? It's a hardware abstraction layer that goes between the device and the host OS.

My point is that VMWare would have less work to do as far as supporting basic I/O since it would be piping in a manner similar in all 3 OSes. They are more similar than dissimilar.

As long as the devices are dependent on carrier distribution it's not going to happen. As it is right now if you want WinMo and Android, you buy two phones, they subsidize one (which locks you into a contract) and then sell you the second for additional profit.

There are so many things f**ked the hell up with the wireless industry the ability to load your own OS barely even registers on the radar. How about we start by getting the carriers to discount service for those of us whose devices they aren't subsidizing. Once that happens buying unlocked becomes a much better value proposition, then with the carriers, and their desire for artificial market segmentation, out of the way a multi-boot smartphone might be possible.

People from the FCC / congress, if you're reading this, make it happen.

I hate cases and never used them... until I dropped my iPhone 3GS, shattering the screen and necessitating the $200 purchase of a new one. Now it's wrapped in hard plastic.

I use a magnetic clip wallet-style case for my phone. It's just something that folds over can covers the screen. I got it mainly because I have a tendency to put my keys in the same pocket.

I have an overpriced clear ZCover for my iPod Touch. It makes it more grippable and makes it feel a bit less like you're holding a piece of glass in your hands. Since the deadliest strike on these things seems to be a corner or edge strike that cracks the screen, it should offer good protection too. Even a little bit of waterproofing around the power button.

For other devices, I do it on a per-case basis. The PSP and DS got clear, anti-scratch filters on the screens and nothing more, though the PSP gets a leather carrying case because it has no natural defenses.

Normally for cel phones it's just a hip case or clip though, because my pockets are already full, and I want to be able to answer calls that come in before it stops ringing. Also good to have a radio transmitter with a battery that has the potential to engage in thermal runaway a little farther from my precious genitalia, regardless of how remote the liklihood is of it catching fire.

As I see it, anyone who calls people who use cases clowns must have free review units shipped to their door every day, so it doesn't matter if you break a phone or twelve. Talk about losing touch with any idea of what real world users face... like I'm really going to buy a phone/PDA that costs more than many computers now, and just use it until it takes one fateful blow, then go buy another one.

@fuchikoma: I almost forgot the reason I got the case in the first place - it has saved my iPod from countless crashes caused by putting it on a desk to control and read the display, then getting up with headphones on. Most of the time, the headphones will pull out of the iPod as it stays well anchored in place. I used to have a poor Samsung YP-Z5 that would either do that, or slip out of my shirt pocket as I tied my shoes every day or two, so I figured something with a glass display that runs to the edges wouldn't last too long in the same position.

a case is essential for an iphone/ipod touch. even then, the mirrored back will be noticeably blemished within 24 hours. also a screen protector is a must. the first touch i had i didn't take care of it, and it soon developed playback problems requiring constant reboots, and the screen was scratched to hell. i put a protector and a case on the new one before i even turned it on.

I also fan it with palm fronds and feed it grapes.

    @SuperNumberOne:

ipod touch, specifically. it was the first gen which, due to the flat back, was prone to compression related issues. the 2nd gen convex back mitigates that problem.

i dunno, i dropped it a couple of times, and my pockets are always full of other things. right pocket always has a knife, so that was an issue. but the final nail in the coffin was taking it to burning man to provide 24 hour dubstep in our pyradome or domamid (depending on who you ask) it made it all the way through but was encrusted and impregnated with corrosive playa dust.

If the iPhone's terrible teflon design wasn't so slippery, these covers wouldn't be so popular.

Apple, I love your designs, but this is a day-one flaw that should have been fixed ages ago.

Zagg it up. It provides enough grip so that the iPhone isn't slippery (it barely slides), protects the phone from scratches, adds no bulk and makes it easier to get in and out of a pocket than a case. I've used it overnight camping in Monument Valley, climbing in Joshua Tree and hiking the dunes in Death Valley with no damage. And if something goes wrong with it they'll replace it for free.

@twoeightnine: Just to clarify - if your Zagg cover gets scratched or damaged they'll replace the cover for free. Not the phone.

If you drop an iPhone that's totally covered with Zagg's product, it doesn't protect it much from the fall. Not like an (albeit uglier) actual hard case.

@EnochLight: That is correct and is better than you can say for most cases.

As for fall protection, eh, I probably drop my phone more often and in more unusual situations than most people and the combination of build quality + Zagg has kept my phone like new.

@twoeightnine: Not all the Zagg skins are one simple piece, MOST have all these little intricate slices that have a tendency to get scrubbed off your device. I had one of these small slivers come off and get lost, so they warned me that i would be charged the full retail if they didn't get all of it back.

When getting a new one, you must give them your CC to pay for a small "postage and processing" fee as well as pre-authorizing full-retail amount of a new set "just in case" they don't get the whole kit back.

So, really it's not as simple as their marketing makes it seem. BTW, I've used Zagg since they were InvisibleSHIELD applied on at least 8 of my last phones. It's nice initially and I liked that it was shiny, yet grippy. Eventually gunk gets underneath the edges, and it peels off.

I have a Nokia N82 that I have broken like 3 times, before that I had a Nokia N80 that I broke twice. I have dropped my G1 several times already, luckily the guy I bough it from included a body glove case, yeah it makes the phone thicker but my phone isn't broken (yet).

I want an iPhone but I know it will be broken within a week.
