It's going to be sold $100 not $600. The bill of material on the phone is below $150, manufacturing costs per phone is below $15. Google can subsidize it to $100 unlocked if you buy it through an active Google account. I think it'll even come with free 100mb data usage per month, enough for as much Google Voice, Gtalk, Gmail, App pings and image-less browsing that you want. With 1GB for $10 in the US and 1GB for less than 5€ in Europe.
Ok, just a query here. I'm sure I read somewhere about this phone having animated backgrounds? Am I imagining this? Its just the background we see in these pics seems to have blocks of light with trails, If these are moving that would be cool, Ultimately useless, but cool.
I sure hope that this thing doesn't turn out like the HTC mytouch 3G, which, for being a $400 (sans contract), is marginal when it comes to responsiveness, though is an overall attractive device. I want T-Mobile's version of Moto's Droid.
@Segador: How would they recover their subsidy though? They already have all of my information what more could they want? In the end let's not forget that Google is really in the advertising business and all of the data just allows them to be incredibly specific with their ads.
Perhaps the subsidy would be the new animated background would be all advertisements.
@vagrawal: The "iPhone killers" never do man...It's just a fact of life. Remember the non-stop pre-release coverage of the Pre? Or the Storm? Or the Hero? I could go on...but you get my point.
@OCEntertainment: Ah, the spotlight. How correct you are. What we need is a "iPhone spotlight taker-awayer" phone. Hopefully it comes sooner rather than later, eh?
How quickly we become jaded, eh? This thing is packing a 600 MHz 32-bit ARM processor (also to be in the HTC Photon), an AMOLDED screen with the same resolution as the iPhone (but should be brighter/crisper, and less battery-drain, being OLED-based), has a camera with more pixels, at least, than most pro digital cameras from a few years ago, *with* a 3.5 mm jack, *and* a microSD slot, GPS, digital compass (and on, and on.. it goes spec-for-spec with the iPhone 3GS, only falling short in the CPU, but besting the iPhone's camera, and with an expansion slot, and a better screen!).
18 months ago - no wait, *12* months ago, this would have been the best Android phone on the planet. Or the best smartphone on the planet period, maybe.
Now? It's a budget model, garnering the equivalent of a Gizmodo yawn... sometimes I think we're all like a bunch of crack addicts. Plus, I'm jealous, because I'm still using a Touch Diamond, until either (a) the Moto Milestone makes to Thailand, or (b) the official Google Phone is released (and I can get it in Thailand... or sent to me, hahah)
This is going to have terrible international repercussions given the Taiwanese place of manufacture.
As if Chinese/Taiwanese relations needed any more straining, I foresee an Apple-branded, Foxconn-made missile being fired from the mainland as a warning against this display of Google/Taiwanese sovereignty.

The iPhone killer won't be singular. And it won't kill the iPhone either. But it could, like Windows did with the Mac, take the spotlight away.

I'm just not a fan of HTC manufactured phones, is that ok with you? Does that bother/offend you in some way?
And yes my Windows Mobile Palm Treo 750 makes the world go round
