Post iPhone, post financiapocolypse, post netbook craze, post the nothingness of Macworld and a lackluster CES, it's like everyone is rallying around the idea that THANK PALM there's something new and promising to get all juiced up about. It hasn't even come out and there's positive comparisons with shipping smartphones. It seems like everyone is going out of their way to be as nice to it as possible, from writers to commenters, giving it every benefit of the doubt, like a certain incoming president elect everyone hopes is as good as he seems.
If the iPhone were the "Jesus phone" because it was genuinely a revolutionary advance at the time, the Pre is the "Jesus phone" because it is genuinely viewed as some kind of savior - saving everyone from the polarizing domination of the iPhone, from the half-baked efforts of other companies to compete with it, and from a general sense of tech boredom and malaise.
Of note: there has yet to develop any way to denigrate anyone who praises it. While anyone who has nice things to say about any major product can be summarily dismissed with a single word, fanboy or worse, rooting for the Pre is universally viewed as a noble thing to do. People who would probably never get a Pre in a million years are flooding the internets with faith-based adulation usually reserved for skateboarding dogs and canned hamburgers.

Then you have applications. How many devs are going to be pulled away from the iPhone or Android to mess with this? Probably not many.
I don't know, I just don't get it. What am I missing here?

Yeah, you are right. There is no possible way this could ever work out.

So they know what they are doing, but if that is enough, is something to be seen.
