Always the consummate worker, Chazz was able to turn out quality posts day after day after day, each loaded with the insight and humor that could only come from being in the business for 87 years (or so we estimate—there were no computers to keep track of stuff back when he started). Not only was the man talented, he was extremely supportive as well, helping you develop and nurture ideas not because he had to, but because he wanted you to succeed.

It's thanks to Charlie and Travis's guidance and support I was able transition onto the Gizmodo staff quite quickly and easily all those years ago. And with Charlie's departure, I'm now the holder of the title of "Guy Who's Been At Gizmodo the Longest"; something I'd happily give up to have either of these guys back again.

Here's an example of why Charlie was an extremely valuable member of the team. At CES, two years ago, Mark and I were eyeing this extremely beautiful lady at some bar. Charlie sees this, and the three of us were all quite tipsy, Chuck had the providence to say "guys, you don't want to do that, trust me on this." Several trips to the clinic later, we wish we had.

All of us at the Giz wish Chuck a bright and successful future wherever he's going (although he doesn't need our help—he's already super successful already). Good bye and good luck Charlie!

<![CDATA[Gizmodo Staff Moving On Up]]> The winds of change are gusting to 50 knots here at the Giz, with one veteran moving up and another departing. Charlie White, who's been at Gizmodo since November, 2005, is getting a long-overdue move to Senior Associate Editor, for his unbeatable combination of technical knowledge, fine prose and unending energy. This is as good as it gets for an editor. A fine gentleman and a fine writer.

Also, Travis Hudson, whose no-nonsense voice has become the heart and soul of Gizmodo, is graduating from Kansas State University soon, and his last day at Giz is on Friday.

You may not realize it, but Travis isn't just the youngest fellow on staff. He's been here two years, which makes him the resident veteran (two years is like 12 blogger years). He's been dependable like a clock through that time. His exponential growth and rock-solid posts have been a major factor in Gizmodo's success.

He's been consistently productive here while many of his collegiate colleagues spent time hugging toilets and doing bong hits. I mean, what were you doing in college? Frankly, when I was his age, I was playing Starcraft down at the Boston U SMG computer labs, and drinking a lot of gin.

Travis, Gizmodo will never be the same without you. We'll miss you, buddy.

Readers, love him while you can. In his own words, GFY.

<![CDATA[Yo! Apple's NAB Event Tomorrow Here at 11AM PST]]> Remember: Be here tomorrow at 11am PST to watch us blog the Apple event at NAB, the National Association of Broadcasters conf in Las Vegas. We don't know what's coming down the pipe in a little more than 12 hours from now, but Apple at NAB has historically been all about AV software launches. In 2005, the company pushed out Final Cut Studio and Soundtrack Pro. But last year, Apple used the venue to launch a 17-inch laptop. So gadgets aren't out of the question. The launch rumors for tomorrow are:

A new version of its video editing application Final Cut Pro.
Long overdue, so likely.

Accelerated video and graphics from NVIDIA in the 8-core Mac Pros
Interesting to think the machines that were just launched in April 4th could get a revision already. We heard a rumor about hardware h.264 decoders (and encoders, I'd assume) but there's no evidence.

New Cinema displays.
I like it. The rumors about iSight enabled super monitors have been floating since before the iPhone was unveiled. The chunky price cuts on the day the 8-core Mac Pros launched give us some hope.

Stick with us tomorrow and through the rest of NAB. Charlie's on the floor with a couple of friends who helped at CES, and he's no stranger to NAB, having gone every year since 1994. He'll keep you up to date on the latest from Apple and lots of others, too. The fun starts tomorrow.

<![CDATA[Charlie White, A-List Blogger, Gets Interviewed]]> Our lovely Charlie White, the internet blogebrity that he is, took time to do an interview with Associated Content. In it, he talks about eating frog legs, waking up at six in the morning, how Giz is like broadcast news, and where the blogosphere is heading in the future.

In many ways Charlie White described himself with the last three words above. Spur of the moment, off-the-cuff, exciting and quick. But Charlie White is much more, really.

Much, much more. They didn't even cover "sexy", "very sexy", and "really really sexy". Go over and have a look.

<![CDATA[Gizmodo's Charlie White Is Too Cool For School, Gets Crowned Cool Geek of the Week]]> Charlie, er sorry, I meant King Charlie just earned a spot on Born Rich's Cool Geek of the Week. A guy whose face is under Wikipedia for "Cool Geek"—because he put it there himself—Charlie is connected in every way possible.

How about a guy who automatically updates a website every five minutes, 24/7, using a PC connected to a wireless weather station? Or walks around with a GPS unit strapped to his wrist and Nike + iPod shoes on, uploading all his exercise data to the web on a daily basis (okay, okay, snobs, he wears a solid gold Rolex when he's not exercising)? Or a guy who controls his four-zone climate control system in his test lab via a web browser? Or was seen driving around with four GPS devices blaring at him at the same time, all yelling at him to "turn left! turn left!," which he promptly disobeyed.

Dependent on machines, but not so dependent he doesn't know when to tell them to STFU. That's our Charlie!

<![CDATA[Gizmodo's Charlie White Tells The Post-Gazette What's What About Musical Phones]]> When the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette needed an expert to tell them why music phones like the recent Verizon Chocolate phone have run into some choppy waters, there was only one man to call: our Charlie White.

But these phones all come with some "unwelcome surprises." Besides the cost of music downloads, they often require special headphones (run-of-the-mill headphones won't fit in many cell phones) and extra memory cards for holding music files.

Those kind of "gotchas" point to growth pains for mobile phone companies, said Charlie White, associate editor of Gizmodo, a tech and gadget blog.

"There's still kind of a problem with the cell phone companies. They want to make some money from selling music. ... There's a little bit of an awkwardness there," White said yesterday from Milwaukee.

More schooling to be had on the Post-Gazette's site.

<![CDATA[Resident Badass Charlie White Gets Profiled In The Chicago Tribune]]> Our Associate Editor Charlie White is a household name in Chicago now, and not just for being the inspiration for the chase scene in Batman Begins when Charlie set a new land-speed record down the Magnificent Mile in 2002. The Chicago Tribune has a profile of all the 23,000 things Charlie manages to cram into a day, including writing posts for Gizmodo, articles for DigitalVideoEditing.com, and reviews for DigitalMediaNet.

His favorite of all the gigs is, of course, Gizmodo. But even we have to be careful when we're asking him for information:

So, what Web sites do the Gizmodo guys turn to when tracking down the latest tech news to cover? If he told you, he'd have to, well, explode you.
