Just find 5 fellow Gizmodians who also want to be the proud owners of a "chat pillow".
Have you bought your "chat pillow" yet? No!? Do you not want to be the proud owner of a "chat pillow"?
You do. Well then today is your lucky day. For today (and today only) you too can own any of the fine selection of chat pillows that "Throwboy" have to offer (but for a fraction of the cost). For the low, low price of just $25 you too can own a piece of "pillow history" . (While stocks last)
(Furthermore you (bornonbord) get to buy your pillow for only $24 thus saving you $5!)
Lastly, when you buy a pillow from "bornonbord" you will be automatically entered into a draw to win a $50,000 car!
I have deaf parents and am also involved in the deaf community and this would be huge. To be able to have full conversations that include the beauty of ASL's full language structure with non-manual markers and classifiers that can't be expressed in english would be amazing.
@LuckyLakey: 3 or 4 years ago, I remember reading an article in the Washington Post about the popularity of the Sidekick among students at Gallaudet University. I think it was one of the first phones that had a heavy emphasis on messaging with its querty keyboard.
Would ASL via video chat be significantly faster than IM/SMS?
@SwatLax: The sidekick also added the ability to be able to use ip relay on the go which gave Hearing Impaired people the option to call hearing people in sitiuations where a phone was not accessible nor was a TTY. The problem with IM and SMS is that they are trying to use an english grammar structure to communicate and ASL grammar is more akin to french. It's a romantic language. This is why there was an inappropriate relation with "DEAF/DUMB/MUTE" when all actuality its just the same as a person who is from a foreign country doesn't use proper english. We just expect that if they're born here and live here they should speak it and write it the same way the rest of us do. Thats why they have "interpreters" not "translators".
In some implementations, a proximity sensor 168 can be included to facilitate the detection of the user positioning the mobile device 100 proximate to the user's ear and, in response, to disengage the touch-sensitive display 102 to prevent accidental function invocations. In some implementations, the touch-sensitive display 102 can be turned off to conserve additional power when the mobile device 100 is proximate to the user's ear.
[0029]The mobile device 100 can also include a camera lens and sensor 180. In some implementations, the camera lens and sensor 180 can be located on the back surface of the mobile device 100. The camera can capture still images and/or video.
@beekerstudios: That the item circled is the proximity sensor, 168. The camera, 180, is located in a seperate place, and judging by the different line pattern, it's on a different plane/surface than the proximity sensor. The sensor is to shut off the touch screen when it senses it's near your ear. It's not a CCD or anything.
What we really need is booty to booty video chat for the whole "video sex" thing to really take off. The iPhone is ideally suited with cheek plant touchscreen interface for maximum pleasure.
How would have thought that this is how PlayStation brand would end up. I like online features of video games to PLAY games with friends. If I want to interact with my friends, I will either do it in person, or on a real online social network. I'll have to pass on wasting my time walking around wearing the same t-shirt as the next guy, flirting with virtual trannies! I mean don't get me wrong, I own a PS3 and love to play games on it. It's just I wish they would have invested their time and money on making the console easier to code for so that great games wouldn't be flocking to other places.
@crsa3000: Wouldn't it be better if instead of regular people, you could choose and design your character from a list of fantastical beings or creatures. Then you can have armor, maybe some weapons, and have them cast spells and such. Then you and your friends can go on missions killing monsters or treasure hunting. Later on, if Sony allows, they can let you do PvP... Hmm. I think I'm on to something here. We can call this game World of Fantastical Beings or Creatures.
