Too bad they don't still make hi-def CRTs. Well, they did have a size/weight issue, but the picture from the ones made is astounding.

I'm gonna post this both in a reply and in an original post:

I've got a Sammy 56" DLP LED (HLT 5687S) and love it, but I've warned everyone who drools over my TV when they come over about one caveat...viewing angle.

LCD's dominate when it comes to that. If your environment caters to only looking straight on (i.e. from a couch in front than you should consider a DLP (my 56" DLP LED was $1300 with a free ($350 normally) glass stand included) and yeah..it's real sexy.

Everyone who is gifted enough to visit my pad questions my budget, quickly followed by "what would you recommend if I were you?"

Friends/Family/Escorts are shocked when told the wild truth about what they're looking at. I have no affiliation with NBC, but

The more you know...*

* the less you don't know.

There are a few multiples to deal with....

1) Size (that's what she said aside)

2) I agree mostly with everything Matty B said above

@MrBlahBlah: compared to what. Reference TV's before the digital boom and you will will see the same price equivalency.

@donjumpsuit: You should consider plasma if your actually interested good picture quality while watching movies/tv.

If you're looking for a computer monitor, go lcd.

The top plasma sets are generally the reference which all other sets are compared to.

Most 60hz televisions under 50" can be had for under $900, if you shop online. 120hz televisions are now the most costly with prices $1,500+.

What's crazy is that you can get a 56" TV for under $900. See for yourself here: [tvlampsnbulbs.com]

It isn't a "flat-panel" so you won't be able to hang it on your wall but if you'd end up just putting it on a TV stand, it probably won't matter.

Oddly enough, I have a Vizio and everyone that sees it loves it. Sadly it's only a 32 inch but hopefully I plan on treating myself to something bigger.

I would take the as low as $799 40" 1080p Samsung or the as low as $899 40" 1080p Sony Bravia. These two have the best picture I have seen in this price range.

@jpitsch: Those might have been Black Friday-only deals. We tried to make sure contenders in this Battlemodo would stay priced under $900 for the duration of the holidays.

@bpapa9013: I agree with you. Five years ago flat panel plasmas (not many LCDs at the time) in this size range were selling for upwards of $5,000, with many pushing the $8,000 range. I remember my wife looking lovingly at them, and me telling her to be patient, that in a few years you'd be able to get one for less than a grand.

@Vitor Candal: We didn't do two plasmas because we heard that Vizio sources Panasonic panels, and we had these other bargain basement-priced LCDs. It is still not clear whether or not that Vizio is a Panasonic-built panel with Vizio wrapper.

@Wilson Rothman: But even if were the same panels as Panasonic's, wouldn't the Panny version have finer picture controls than Vizio? Because that seemed to be the deal breaker between Vizio and Toshiba.

"Better controls would have been to the Vizio plasma's tremendous advantage."

@bitgod: It's not as obvious as you might think. Especially when they sale's people at Best Buy prey on people who are not well informed on these new technologies.

"Well if you're concerned about price, ma'am, the Julio's Discount Plasma brand is every bit as good as the Vizio."
