Just to throw this in here, the reason why chickens evolved to do this is so that they can see. Unlike you or me, they cannot keep their focus on a point and move their heads at the same time. For example, you can focus on the words I'm writing and shake your head back and forth, and your eyes will compensate by turning exactly so that they're both pointed at the same spot on the screen while your head moves. Chickens can't do that.

Also, when chickens walk, they bob their heads back and forth. When they run, they do it even faster, in time with their steps. They do this for the same reason. There is a forward rush of the head, where they can't really see anything, and then the head stays stationary relative to the ground and the body moves forward. They do this in order to see while moving about.

Two ways evolution has solved the same problem.

@Toastie: That would have to be one hell of a hulking super-chicken to walk around with a Red One on its head...

Maybe a zombie chicken would be strong enough?
