Bandai Smart Berry to Train Next Generation of Female Executives

Little girls in Japan will get their chance today to act out their fantasies of being American corporate tools, thanks to Bandai's new mobile communicator “Smart Berry” toy, which kind of looks like a Mylo done up in pastel colors. The Smart Berry includes a touchscreen LCD panel measuring roughly 2 inches by 1.4 inches, a slide- out keyboard, and Wi-Fi capabilities for email, chat and online games. More »

Mommy Megaphone Will Out You As an Ineffective Parent

The Mommy Megaphone is a gag gift for parents that bills itself as a “sure-fire way to get everyone to listen.” It has a speak mode and a siren mode, can project over 500 feet and is allegedly weather and baby-resistant. With an adjustable volume range of 5 to 10 Watts however, it's almost completely useless. Kids are yelly; when I was young, I'm pretty sure I'd hit 10 Watts in a normal conversation. You know what would be more effective? Holding up a paddle. That always got me to listen right quick. [Nerd Approved]

First Footage: Same OLPC XO Boots Both Sugar and Windows XP

This is the first footage of the same XO OLPC doing a dual-boot of Sugar Linux and Windows XP—something skeptics have said wasn't going to happen. Soon, XOs will ship with both Sugar and XP for Boot Camp-style dual-booting options. They will never come with only XP, though the team is working on adding more of the Sugar functionality, like the mesh network and the fun sharing apps, to the Windows side. Once again, little PCs are coming to the rescue of Windows XP. More »

Super Mario Galaxy Wii Mod Makes the Stars Mushroom With Delight

There's little we've said about our modder buddy Ramon that we haven't already said back when he made the Zelda, Samus, Rockstar and Clerks Wii mods. This guy is talented AND he has good aesthetic taste—something not commonly found with modders. This time he's auctioning off this one-of-a-kind Super Mario Galaxy Wii mod that will benefit Child's Play, the children's charity started by Penny Arcade. Video hands-on, details and more pics after the jump. More »

OLPC Refusing to Cancel Orders?

At least one Gizmodo reader has informed us that he attempted to cancel his OLPC laptop order and was denied. Apparently, they are "not accepting cancellations from anyone for any reason." That is, unless you refuse your shipment then call and cancel after the laptop arrives back at the manufacturer. This doesn't make a damn bit of sense, so we must ask: has anyone else received a similar denial? [Thanks Joe!]

The Kiddo Kidkeeper Keeps Your Child on a Digital Leash

Smart Target's Kiddo Kidkeeper Proximity alarm helps bring peace of mind to the parents of adventurous children using a wearable wireless transmitter. When a child has wandered out of a pre-set range, the transmitter will trigger a visual and audible alarm on the parent's receiver, prompting them to reel the kid back in. More »

Microsoft's Special Windows XP for OLPC Runs Directly off of an SD Card

Addressing one of the major reasons OLPC's XO Laptop is being shunned by some countries—the lack of a Windows operating system—Microsoft is developing a version of Windows XP and Office that's run directly off of a 2GB SD card. (They convinced OLPC to add an SD slot to the mobo for this very project.) It'll be conducting "limited field trials" with OLPC next month, with a possible launch sometime after June. The catch? 60 Minutes Looks at OLPC, Up Close and Personal

The long-running CBS News magazine 60 Minutes takes time out from its Paris Hilton and Anna Nicole Smith coverage to give us a peek at the $208 OLPC (One Laptop Per Child), and here's a clip with Walter Bender, president of software and content on the project. He claims battery life of 10-12 hours "by the time we're done with all our tuning," which might be stretching it a bit since other reviewers saw three hours tops thus far. He also claims its Wi-Fi reception is probably 2-3 times better than a $3000 laptop. Check out the easy charging with that salad spinner-like charging device. Too bad the thing didn't end up with a $100 price tag as was originally planned. [CBS]

OLPC Give One, Get One Program Extended to Dec. 31, Raking in $2 Million a Day

Even if governments aren't ponying up, a hell of a lot of people are: OLPC's Give One, Get One program's been pulling in $2 million in "donations" a day. Realizing it'd be dumb and pointless to cut off a major revenue stream in four days—totally missing prime holiday spending time—they're stretching the new "deadline" way out to Dec. 31. More »

The OLPC Gets Handed Its Ass...Again

Intel and Microsoft have shipped 150,000 of their "Classmate PCs" to the Libyan government, beating the OLPC to the market there. OLPC is expected to ship 1.2 million of their laptops to Libya, but that may prove difficult given the recent news regarding production problems. [BetaNews]

OLPC Production Hits Snag, Delay and Shortage Imminent

Some "last minute bugs" will push back the OLPC production process to November 12th, resulting in a shortage of computers available for a holiday program in North America and Canada. This Give-1-Get-1 program would have allowed buyers in the US an Canada to purchase a two computer package for $400, with one of the laptops shipped overseas to an underprivileged child. At this point, there is no telling how many laptops, if any, will be shipped for the program before the holidays. [Reuters]

India Comes Crawling Back to OLPC

After referring to the OLPC laptop as "pedagogically suspect" a year ago, and claiming that they could build a laptop for $10 this past May, India has come back down to Earth and decided to take part in the project by delivering 22 of the laptops to lucky children in a one-room school in Maharashtra. Its a small start for a country with over a billion inhabitants, but officials have noted that distribution could broaden as early as June. [AP]

Samus Wii Mod Tucks, Rolls, Explodes With Goodness

Gizmodo buddy Ramon of Ultimate DS, Wii, and PSP mod fame is back, this time with a Samus Metroid mod for the Nintendo Wii. Not only does it have a big S on the side for Samus (or Sexy) and a Wiimote battery charger built in (!), he's painted the parts red, orange and green to match her motif. He's auctioning this off on eBay, like his previous mods, so a portion of the proceeds will go to Penny Arcade's Child's Play Charity; which works to allow one lucky little girl to eventually grow up to don a suit of armor and shoot big brains in the face. If not, what charity am I thinking of? [eBay] More »

Camp Okutta Teaches Kids How to Lob the Perfect Grenade

There are summer camps and summer camps, it seems. Camp Okutta, somewhere in the Canadian wilds, is the best training camp outside a war zone, apparently, where you can toughen up your little darlings. Twinky-looking camp counselors give classes in grenade throwing, automatic weapon handling and land mine dodging (quite a handy skill if you're thinking of playing frisbee with them in the near future.) And I know what your next question is going to be: Where can I sign the brats up? More »

It's better to be safe than sorry: Baby Alert's Child Minder system (baby not included) replaces the generic strap on your kid's car seat, causing a keychain alarm to sound every time you move more than ten feet from the buckled fastener that ties your tot down. $64.95 for peace of mind. OLPCs Used to Download Porn by Nigerian School Kids

The Third World shorties make me so proud. According to Reuters, "Nigerian schoolchildren who received laptops from a U.S. aid organization have used them to explore pornographic sites on the internet." The article says that the Nigerian government, who released the statement, felt the educational program had "gone awry" on account of the boobies, but did not say whether government officials were angry at the schoolchildren, angry with the US-based providers of laptops, or angry that they themselves did not have the necessary laptoppage to do some "exploring" of their own.
