Not sure what the deal is, but my Google Chrome "about" option says "up to date" at version 1.0.154.48. If I attempt to download (even clicking Beta) it only gives me 1.2.141.5 but attempting to install it does nothing. If Chrome is open, the install fails with an error. If I close Chrome and attempt to install it begins, then the installer widow disappears and nothing has changed.

Google is not doing very well. I support the attempt, and it has promising features, but they are failing on several fundamental points. Ironically, while posting this, Chrome crashed (badly) and, upon reopening, let me reopen this page. Fortunately (for me) what I'd typed thus far was intact.

Not enjoying this Google experience.

@FunkyMonkey: I guess so. Chrome won't update or install anything. I just got rid of it entirely and my computer works great, so not sure who exactly was at fault.

Chrome isn't ready for primetime anyway. Google needs to stop fucking off and start getting shit done if they want people to care. Hardly anyone outside of bloggers and tech savvy geeks have even heard of Chrome, or are aware Google does anything besides a search page.

Who has noticed that Chrome is kind of a memory hog? I looked in the Windows Task Manager and there are a ton of chrome things open. Each one of them is taking up quite a bit of memory also.

Maybe its just me since in running Vista 64bit.

@Mike Delozier: From what I know if Chrome, it assumes a large footprint but is easily able to segment that memory out to other tabs or processes as it becomes necessary (likewise, a single "crashed" tab can usually be shutdown or seperated leaving other tabs and processes safe). I've certainly seen less slowdown caused by numerous open tabs or rendering concurrent processes in Chrome as opposed to IE or Safari.

Frankly, I'm disappointed with Chrome. It is fast, yes, and gives you more real estate, but it crashes too frequently on too many sites. Including Google flippin' Maps, YouTube, and PDFs. I gave up with seeing the "aw, snap" message every 2 seconds and uninstalled Chrome, and am just playing with IE8, FF3, and Opera instead. For some reason, IE8 seems must faster than it used to be last week...

@amacieli: I've been using the Safari 4 beta on Windows since it came out and it's pretty much my default browser now. It offers pretty much the exact same amount of screen real estate as chrome, but has actual features and a not completely shit bookmark navigation system.

@UnexpectedEOF: Safari was stable (but slow) for me, but otherwise navigation was a pain in the ass. The tab system was utterly ridiculous and counterintuitive in windowed mode. Hated all the needless frills and garbage. I want a goddamned browser, not a "media experience".

Seriously, what is wrong with Apple that they can't just make a product that isn't a friggin' theme park of sliding crap?

Google got navigation and simplicity right, and stability (for me) was rock solid; only crashed once. Unfortunately, it fails in numerous other places. Google's failure to incorporate the features they developed with their very own IE toolbar is a major blunder. The Google toolbar features made IE truly useful, and failing to incorporate even half of those features was a serious blow to Chrome's usability.

@BeautifulAgony: Agreed. That was one of the two reasons I stopped using Chrome after about 2 days. The other being that my computer was seemingly to old and slow to run it well (Athlon XP 2500, 1 GB Ram, XP Pro). Give me the Google Toolbar and I'll go back in a heartbeat.

Add drag and drop support for jpegs, gifs, png without relabeling them all 'untitled', makes chrome hell for dragin embarrasing photos of friends off facebook

@Andre Ondre: When I drag images from Chrome to the desktop (or any open folder) it drops them with the names fully intact.
