This, of course, created rumors.

MacRumors points out the most obvious possibility: that Apple is letting current stock dry up to facilitate a transition to new, refreshed 20" displays, with LED backlighting and Mini DisplayPort compatability a la the 24" model. This sounds reasonable, but another possibility—less agreeable—is that Apple's range of displays will contract, leaving the low and high ends at 24" and 30", respectively. If the refresh theory is true, we should know soon enough—a cessation of deliveries, assuming it's to make way for new product, is generally a late indicator. And as far as speculating about a possible round of product updates goes, you really can't ignore yesterday's leaked pictures of the highly perforated probably-Mac-Mini. Interesting timing, at least. <![CDATA[Apple Cinema Displays To Get LED Refresh?]]> Macrumors is reporting that new Cinema Displays are coming from Apple that will bring LED backlights to the whole line, which is in sync with the company's plan to ditch fluorescent backlights entirely. The tipster is seeing Macworld in January as a likely time for them to pop up. They haven't been updated in any large fashion since 2004, so this doesn't seem that out of the question. HDMI please? <![CDATA[Yo! Apple's NAB Event Tomorrow Here at 11AM PST]]> Remember: Be here tomorrow at 11am PST to watch us blog the Apple event at NAB, the National Association of Broadcasters conf in Las Vegas. We don't know what's coming down the pipe in a little more than 12 hours from now, but Apple at NAB has historically been all about AV software launches. In 2005, the company pushed out Final Cut Studio and Soundtrack Pro. But last year, Apple used the venue to launch a 17-inch laptop. So gadgets aren't out of the question. The launch rumors for tomorrow are:

A new version of its video editing application Final Cut Pro.
Long overdue, so likely.

Accelerated video and graphics from NVIDIA in the 8-core Mac Pros
Interesting to think the machines that were just launched in April 4th could get a revision already. We heard a rumor about hardware h.264 decoders (and encoders, I'd assume) but there's no evidence.

New Cinema displays.
I like it. The rumors about iSight enabled super monitors have been floating since before the iPhone was unveiled. The chunky price cuts on the day the 8-core Mac Pros launched give us some hope.

Stick with us tomorrow and through the rest of NAB. Charlie's on the floor with a couple of friends who helped at CES, and he's no stranger to NAB, having gone every year since 1994. He'll keep you up to date on the latest from Apple and lots of others, too. The fun starts tomorrow.

<![CDATA[Apple Cinema Displays Get Chunky Price Cuts]]> It's been a busy morning for the gang in Cupertino. In addition to the spankin' new 8-core Mac Pro, Apple has also lowered the pricing on its Cinema Displays. The once $799 20-inch LCD is now going for $599, whereas the $1,299 23-incher is now going for $899. But perhaps the biggest cut goes to the 30-inch display, which is now selling for $1,799.

For comparison's sake, Dell's 3007WFP-HC is $300 cheaper at $1,499 while their 27-incher sits at $1,169. And unlike the Apple displays, neither of the Dell displays are nearing their end of life. Just a little something to consider if you're shopping for a new LCD.

<![CDATA[Black iMacs and 8-Core Mac Pros Expected Next Month]]> MacScoop claims to have the inside dirt on next month's rumored Apple announcements, saying we're in for a full barrage of hardware releases, including a black 24-inch iMac and 8-core Mac Pros (no word on whether they'll be sporting new designs). Also in store for us are 15-inch MacBooks and new Cinema Displays with HDMI/HDCP support. I'm getting curious about the Mac Mini upgrades, as they've been flying under the "rumor radar" for awhile now. Only time will tell.
