The thing that most ticked me off about CC and Compusa was what ripoffs their floor models and open box items were. Usually you could get the newer model, which was about twice as powerful, for just a few bucks more. It hardly surprises me that their "blowout" going out of business prices are just as lame.
I got one deal, 3 Blu-Rat movies for $10. The only other good price I saw was a crappy Coby DVD Player for $15. My advice is to save the gas and not go. The movies I got sucked, "Man of the Year", "Star Trek: Insurrection", and "Matrix Reloaded".
I think two of the dates or arrows are flipped around. The "6/20 $164.8 million loss" arrow points to an earlier spot on the graph than the "6/01 Blockbuster Withdraws" arrow. On my calendars, June 1 always comes about three weeks before June 20.
I was recently in Orlando. There is a Circuit City and a Best Buy just blocks from each other. Guess which one was packed? Best Buy because they were catering to the tourism which was Brazilian and had good sales people. This is a vivid example of how Circuit City came to be where it is now. I feel bad for the people working there.
@ae86takumi: I don't feel bad for the people who work there. Every time I went to a Circuit City, the employees were idiots who ignored all the customers, didn't know anything about what they were selling, and stood around in a corner talking to each other. From what I hear, their management is no more competent. Companies like this need to go out of business.
I thought nasty thoughts about Circuit City ever since they forced me to take a 15% restocking fee for returning a DVD camcorder about 4 years ago, even though I only had it for a day. Evil thoughts... day in... day out. "DIE DIE DIE" I would say to myself, silently, each night.
HA! Take that Circuit City!
Now where'd I put my thorazine... maybe I can ask my refrigerator.
My guess would be they had higher prices in a competitive market. First rule of microeconomics kids, if you're in a price-taker market, and you sell above market prices, you will be destined for failure.
Here's a fun game to play. Find your 10 favorite gadgets. Then compare the prices of those products against Best Buy, Amazon, Egghead, or even Crutchfield, etc. Circuit City would always most likely have the higher price. TAKE NOTES BEST BUY!!!!
@Deadhouseplants will never get a star by his name, but he'l...: Once you factor in shipping costs, and the inconvenience of having to wait for a package to get stolen off your front steps...er, I mean to arrive on your front steps, Best Buy doesn't have a lot to worry about. Mostly, the thing that's telling is if you walk into a Best Buy and a Circuit City, and see which store has a higher customer-density. Even when you factor in how much smaller CC stores are than BB stores, they're still generally pretty empty feeling, and that means less sales at the checkout.
CC's decline started when they decided to dump their appliances department, at a time they were second only to Sears in number of appliances sold. Bad business thinking.
Damn you Circuit City!!! And your Circuit Suburb, Circuit Federated Township, Circuit Island, and Circuit County friends!!! Now where am I going to go to wander in the hallucinogenic mix of off-gassing electronics, eye-numbing monitors, ear-numbing speakers, mind-numbing employees, and last year's camcorders? Oh. Best Buy. that's right. Best Buy. Thank God for Best Buy.
