@pekosROB: If you use the #tips tag in that box (instead of #whitenoise, for example) , whatever you enter will go to the #tips page which serves as an alternative to our tips at gizmodo dot com tip line. You're welcome to use either and we always appreciate the tips.
@pekosROB: I'm on weird kicks lately, favoring a lot of 80's stuff for some reason. I'll tweet a playlist one of these days and you'll see the sheer insanity of my horrid music taste.
@Rosa Golijan: It's all good, 80's was the pinnacle of horrid pop music as far as I'm concerned, with legends of Pop like Limahl, New Order, D-Mode, A-ha, The Cure, and occasionally the Cult, and Rick Astley to name a few.
Anyone that rick-rolls whitenoise will never, and I mean never, get an Wave invite from me.
@Rosa Golijan: haha no, just had to think of a way to incorporate you being almost perfect without trying to hard... haha but the 80s were crazy.
i love the line in Dazed and Confused when they talk about the decades, "the 60s rocked, the 70s are lame, hopefully the 80s will be awesome."
maybe not word for word, but something along the lines of that. how can i be against the decade i was conceived and born in? 1982 - in fact my birthday is on Jan 3, so YOU can send me some surprise music in my inbox this time if you feel. :-P
@Rosa Golijan: haha yes you should. it's more important than Christmas and all other holidays combined. then again the older i get, the less important it is to me. i can already rent a car without paying high insurance and buy alcohol and porn, so what else is there to look forward to? senior citizen discounts?
as a noob- i click #whitenoise and i see a bunch of fragments of conversations and other nonsense. how do i make sense of any of this? i realize people can reply to what i write, but honestly i can't find any content to reply to myself. does that make sense?
@AlexSea: It just kinda is....here. It's an interesting idea, but there's no great way to keep continuing topics around so everyone can see them, like a forum. This is fine for a two-person thread, but anything larger gets unwieldy.
@Sticks Calhoun: right, exactly. gawker inc's comment system is perfect for specific blog posts, but for general chatter they should mirror something like reddit's self posts.
Why are you guys still afraid to implement a proper article to this?
Like Lifehackers Open Thread, Kotaku's Talk Amongst Yourselves.
Cos the hashtag system is pretty useless without a tag cloud.
@jrghoull: They really do need a tagcloud page.
Otherwise you're just gonna end up with a ton of single-use tags and orphan pages.
Also means you have somewhere to click to access all these tags easy. The current method takes a few loops to get through to a list of comments with a tag on it.
@deanbmmv: I'm really getting the feeling they're testing out the hashtag system on a smaller audience before they move to make it more of a focus. I mean I have no real insight to back this up, but you notice the comment system keeps getting tweaked, and there's no way the designers of the site don't realize the difficulty in using a forum you can't see.
I wouldn't be surprised if the tag cloud came later on when the system is stable.
@deanbmmv: mind you, my above post was sincere, not sarcastic. I've seen tag clouds and most of the time they seem almost useless. In this case however, it's the perfect solution.
Great write-up guys...but I still feel like whitenoise is gonna get lost (especially to new commenters) unless there's a link somewhere to remind folks. I'm excited about whitenoise and I still only remember to check in and see what's up maybe once every few days.
Maybe it could get a place up there next to the tags beside the submit box?
@OCEntertainment: I second that. A direct link to the #whitenoise section would keep it visible to everyone (Especially newbs) and guarantee regular conversations.
BAH HUMBUG! Unless the comments code of conduct crap is suspended in the "whitelist", I want no part of this. Basically Gizmodo wants to be Twitter. There already is a Twitter, and you can say anything you want on it.
Yes there's several other things you can do to earn a star:
1. Cat burglar skills, and the ability to photograph new tech products with said skills.
2. Having a girlfriend underwear model who doesn't get snippy when asked to model with the latest cell phone at the AT&T store on the day a new product is available.
3. Being an underpaid big box tech who doesn't mind sending a spreadsheet of the latest product release plans their way.
4. A female who is willing to wear the original Star Trek miniskirt and pantyhose uniform.
5. If you can comment in Klingon, or if you know who is the top rogue in World of Warcraft, can can't tell who won or even played in the last Superbowl...
