My brother wrote a game on one and brought the whole thing to my mom's house to show it off.
You had to "fly" a targeting reticule onto a tie fighter (easy one in asciii) and hit the space bar to shot at it.
It wasn't perfect at first, so my little sister and I ended up being beta testers (long before it was hip) to help him out.
5th grade. My first computer experience. We used to take the tapes home and play them in our tape players. eeeeeeeeee ooooooo EEEEEE uuuuuuu UUUUUUUU eeeeeeeee OOOOOOOOO aaaaaaaaaaa

We used to edit the codes to the games to make our own versions of them. Programmers eventually got wise to this and it wasn't possible to use LIST and access to codes in later programs.
From wikipedia: "Easter Egg: In PET Microsoft Basic (3000 series only), typing the command "WAIT 6502,100" will fill the screen with the text "MICROSOFT!"
@GlenTen: That's wacky considering I didn't think Microsoft really came to prominence until after the PET era? That would have been something to see. The first easter egg?
@Kakkoister: But the PET ran on Microsoft Basic. Microsoft was founded in 1975. The first PET was announced in 1977. That was still the time they were using a blibbet in their logo.
That Commodore 64 color palette is a thing of beauty that brings out the natural lusciousness of Princess Barbaretta. We all may debate the answer to the "great game, or greatest game ever" question, but there is no question who our favorite doll is.
We had that game. It was amazing how inappropriately one could dress Barbie for whatever that dork Ken had in mind, if he didn't say "Sorry Barbie, plans have changed" and screw the whole thing up.
Ok when i was 10 i played this, and it was one of the best commodore 64 games ever created. Other than the fact that barbie is insane and is constantly and perpetually going on a date with Ken.

Back then I guess everything more powerful than a calculator was 'the competition' though...

I think that's my personal record for most times saying 'sarcasm' in a sentence. My brain hurts now.
