These kinds of all-in-ones totally suck to work on, I dont have 4 hours to tear apart a frickin computer... Gimme a DELL tower and I'll be done in 10-30min. Plus DELL gives me overnight parts. #lenovoa70z
I'm building a system that outclasses this with a Cooler Master ATCS 840 case.... for hundreds less. It's a novel design and if the customer care is good it may be worth it. But I can make mine with 23" Samsung monitor and premium mouse and keyboard for just over 3k... where as all that would run you closer to 4k with this system. It does look bad ass though :) #maingear
Judging by the logos on the inside of the 5.25" drive bays that case is designed by Silverstone. Silverstone has also introduced cases with the vertical motherboard tray to it isn't that far of a stretch. The case alone is probably worth around $200.
The watercooling isn't anything special and you can get a similar corsair watercooling system for less than $70. #maingear
Wait. Am I getting this right? A custom gaming PC maker is focusing on making actual PCs with a clean aesthetic and not clunky, garish things that look more like they belong in a ricer's garage than a workspace? This, after a Wii accessory in the likeness of a baby doll comes out?
That case is awesome, I wish more computers came with aluminium/metal cases instead of boring plastic. But if it's going to over inflates the price by $1000, then I think I'll pass...thank you #maingear
I don't get why people BUY custom PCs, the fun part is getting all those parts in the mail and putting it together yourself and paying as little as humanly possible for the absolute most performance.
If i wanted a pre-built a desktop I'd buy a mac. #maingear
@Jesustron: What you don't get is that most people aren't computer techs or know anything about the inside of a computer. And they should not have to know about what is inside the computer no more than you should know how to work on a car to drive it. Computers are used as appliances to check email, entertain people, browse the web, be productive, etc ... Period. For some of us, knowing everything about a computer is what we like to do. It doesn't make us better and it doesn't make the main stream public stupid. #maingear
@Christopher Cox: And what you don't get is that 99% of the targeted demographic wouldn't even give two hoots about buying a pre-built rig because they already know better. This rig is NOT meant for casual use. If you buy this solely to check e-mail and browse the tubes then you are a gigantic boob.
This is the modern-day equivalent of going to your parents and asking for a pony and getting a rocking horse. They'll jokingly consider it until they see how much it really costs and after picking their jaws up off the floor go get a PC-in-a-box from best buy.
Impressive? Yes. Cost effective? Not so much. #maingear
You know what? The A70z would be perfect for people like my parents who don't need an open upgrade path and are operating on a serious budget. Even though it's a business line computer I'd probably hook them up with one as a gift. #lenovoa70z
I also had mixed feelings about the 27" screen. It's big, impressive, and blows you away at first sight, but at the same time it's rather fatiguing on the eyes because of the high dpi. Only time will tell if this iMac can be comfortably usable for long durations.
Also copious amounts of heat is correct. This iMac is sizzling hot to the touch near the CPU and GPU units. Could function very well as a heater in the cold winter months.
@Brian Lam: My laptop's screen has a pretty high DPI (1600*900 at 13.1 inches) and I have gotten used to it over time. I definitely think the extra pixels are worth getting used to the screen. #appleimac27inch
@Steve: the issue is that you sit closer to small laptopscreens than big 27 inchers. its like a tv with a resolution of a laptop. cellphone have even more res. #appleimac27inch
I'm interested in the 21.5-inch model, but does anyone know about its screen? I'm afraid it uses a TN panel like the old 20-inch model -- that was horrible, not only the brightness was uneven, but the COLOURS! If you had a picture on the bottom half of the screen and you dragged to the top half, its colours would change. It was that bad! #imac#appleimac27inch
I'm using the 27" iMac now, I just bought it. It's the $1700 one.
Yes, the screen rez is daunting. The app buttons and the text below them are really small, so are the side bar items on folders. All other on screen text can be increased in size to make it more readable.
The magic mouse is actually pretty cool. It is really flat, but intuitive. Took no getting used to at all. I increased the scroll and sweep to max speed and now it works nearly like I want it to. I used to use a Kensington two button mouse with scroll wheel on my old Mac and I'm not missing the wheel. The pointer almost makes it from corner to corner with a fast sweep, but I would like it to be just a little faster. I'll try to find a 3rd party app to speed it up a little more.
The 27 inch screen is huge. I mean HUGE. For the first few hours of use I felt like I was sitting in the front row of a movie theater. I'm rapidly getting used to it and like it. All in all, not much to complain about.
Also, I made the Apple store give me the extended USB keyboard with the number pad. The blue tooth keypad is tiny.
P.S. If you're running Leopard and hate the transparent top menu bar, download Onyx, it will let you change it to solid white. So much better.

That 27' with the i7 is my new drug. However, there is one important detail to take note of with regards to the i7 version.
Most i7 mobo's have triple channel memory (and some other goodies). However, the iMac most likely uses a combo i5/i7 mobo. This will prevent the i7 version from taking advantage of triple channel memory, or any of the other i7 exclusive goodies.
While this is more of a "powerhouse" issue, and not really the domain of a stand-alone computer like the iMac, it is somewhat important to anyone really excited about the i7 version of the iMac. #appleimac27inch
I recently bought an iMac 24 (3.08, 4gb ram, 1tb, ATI 4850). And by recently I mean I received it less than a week ago. So needless to say that when I logged into apple.com and saw that my shiny new desktop was already yesterdays news I was a tad bit aggravated. So I just had to call up apple and see whats up.
I told the lady on the phone and she barely batted an eye before she said "no problem sir" Then paid for the shipping back, full refund, and I am currently waiting on my new iMac 27 (Quad 2.8, 8gb ram, 1tb, ATI 4850). Hopefully It ships out in early November and not later.
So I figured I would share with you all the great customer service apple has. I must say though. The only thing I didn't like about this new model was that I couldn't get a better graphics card than from my previous model. Other than that I can't wait!!!
@bonedog73: Well, it takes me all of 10 minutes to replace the HDD in a Mini since I *know how*.
What honestly confuses me is the Mac Mini colo people (I know a number of these people), who have been hacking extra drives and into minis and sticking them into data centers for years. I would think that having redundant hardware and easier servicing would outweigh the size/power advantages of the mini, but I'm apparently wrong on that one. #appleimac27inch
For the most part this looks to be3 a good update. Desktop grade processors are a great upgrade since laptop stuff is gimped compared to real desktop stuff. The 27" screen sounds really nice as well if it were sold separately I'd consider replacing one of my current stock of screens.
The cost seems a little crazy. 2k for a quad core is a lot of money(a lot!), my quad core PC cost $1200 and I bought it with 3 cable tuners. I would say this is a good option if you want a Mac desktop with some power but it's not enticing me into buying. #appleimac27inch
@Xeno: Your $1200 PC came with a 27inch, 2560x1440, LED Backlight display and it can run Snow Leopard to take advantage of all those cores (Grand Central)? Awesome, where did you get it? #appleimac27inch
@kaplanfx: Don't bring that stuff here. Almost any computer can run OSX with tweaking. It's just software. I have plenty of monitors including a 30". I wasn't forced to buy another monitor and when I want a new computer I won't be forced to buy another one. #appleimac27inch
This looks great for media-oriented uses (even better if it had a freaking Blu-Ray option!), but I think it's lacking for work functionality... namely losing vertical space by going to 16:9... Most webpagse/excel workbooks/etc., have more vertical than horizontal data, so that equals more swiping with your fancy new mouse (which according to Giz is not ergonomically friendly).
Also, the stock keyboard not having a number pad is dumb, I don't want to type on a laptop keyboard when I'm at a desktop. #appleimac27inch
@cc82: I work in Final Cut Pro. Going to 16:9 actually gives me a -lot- more working area.
Also, if you order from the Apple Store online you can substitute a wired keyboard with a numpad for the wireless one. It's what I did. #appleimac27inch
What's up with the same old purple light/space wallpaper? It seems so tired at this point, even if it is a well-recognized branding point. #appleimac27inch
Apple needs to set up a way in which users/owners of previous Mac models can trade in their system, along with additional money to get their latest products...... Cause I want that new iMac... I'm planning to sell my current iMac & get a few extra hundreds.. an get that!!! So yea... APPLE needs that plan!! lol #appleimac27inch
@Jonathan Orlando Cooke: With Macs, especially the Intel macs, retaining generally good resale value, I don't think it really matters that much. A few years from now when I upgrade to a newer Mac, I'll just use my sold-my-MBP-on-ebay discount. #appleimac27inch

I bought a Mac mini a few years ago, after a year it popped and smoked and died. Out of warranty so threw it in the trash.
This is why DELL monopolizes the market consumer and business. Their shit is easy to work on when breaks.
You have to spend 2 hours replacing a HD in an iMac where as in a DELL it takes 5min.. #appleimac27inch
