off topic, but slightly on: i bought an iHome iPod dock for my gf's daughter, but returned after i found out she doesn't use her iPod very often. then my gf said she wanted to get her one because it might make her use it more. sooo, we went back to best buy and now the mother fuckers are $30 more than when i bought it a few days ago. needless to say i was not pleased and now i feel fucking guilty 'cause i ruined Christmas.
Some of these deals are pretty close, even when you consider tax. In CA that 46XBR9 has $158 in tax, making it $314 more than the best deal on pricegrabber. Maybe the Bluray player and home theater are worth that, maybe not.
surely the whole point of using shutter glasses, instead of the cheaper polarised ones you get in the cinema, is that you wouldn't need a 3D television?
@Wraithen: You would need a special television capable of doubling the refresh rate, or halving the horizontal or vertical resolution in order to display both the left and right images without introducing noticeable flicker. Halving the resolution would be stop-gap measure since it would mitigate the purpose of HD 3D.
@met2art: I'm not saying you're wrong with this - I know very little about this stuff so I'm assuming you know more - but wouldn't a 1080p television refreshing the screen 60 times a second be able to display a shutter-ed 3D movie at 30 frames per second?
@Wraithen: It probably would be technically possible, but it would also depend on how such movies are transferred to disc, and whether it is in a 24-frame format (as most HD movies are). If so, that then introduces issues with 3:2 pulldown, etc. The bigger problem is that not every HD television is going to necessarily support the same refresh rate or methods for frame adjustment. If it doesn't adhere strictly to the same format, then flicker or frame repetition could result, which would destroy the illusion of 3D. The end result is that a 3D HD movie would require a combination of player and television with specific capabilities and settings. Not a huge hurdle, but one that consumers would very likely find annoying.
@yuriythebest3: Unfortunately the polarized system is mostly only capable of displaying depth based on parallax movement, and therefor misses the mark with the more extreme movement toward the camera, and really has no benefit at all in still shots.
@RainyDayInterns: Ahhh PM G4's. I think they are the best computers Apple ever made. I still have my original Sawooth in the closet that I've since gutted and put inside of one of the last MDD models of G4. I bought it (bad power supply) and a previous MDD (bad logic board) for about $100 and pieced them together. Now I've got my "dream machine", a dual proc 1.25GHz G4 (the last G4 came out shortly after at 1.4 or 1.5GHz, but they were prone to some problems).
Funny thing is, the massive (back then) PS can be sold for about $200 by itself, but I love the guy too much to sell him for parts just yet.
For much less than $150 you can buy a nice big sheet of Lexan and most of the other parts there. Seriously, I'm not biting at $150 for something that's supposed to take the abuse I don't want transferred to my Television.
$150? Why isn't there any comments saying this is too much? Why isn't there a Negative point in the review for cost?
Is there something better about this than other clear acrylic? I don't think so really.
Also, do the designers even have children? I know for a fact that a child will eventually realise and lift it up, and then probably pull the lcd off the side.
Anyone have an links on modding a first gen iPod?
I have one with a fried HD. I really loved that iPod, it was faster than the video I got after it, I replaced the battery so it would play for DAYS and it connects via a simple firewire cord. I'd love to be able to use it but everything I've found is for a mini...
Great post, Chris. Nice break from the obsessive gadget lust we're all afflicted with. Unfortunately, out of my entire gadget arsenal, the only older model I have is a Macbook Pro - the one right before the unibody model. Still, I'm hoping this thing lasts another 3 or 4 years or more.
Still using my original 1st-generation iPod to listen to podcasts while in the car. That way I don't clog up my iPhone with a couple gigs of podcasts. My upgrade was a 20-hour battery for the iPod from macsales.com

The 10 year old Sony Vaio does not get as much play as it use to, but our 20" Apple cinema screen and G4 Quicksilver is still going strong.
We did find the new imation 64GB SSD did make a huge difference in speed to revive our "new-ish" 15" MBP.

Keep in mind that this is Gizmodo. Everyone's made of money here. Remember, there's no such things as decent earphones for under $100, folks!
