Hahaha...wow this is hilarious. Where's jesse jackson? Ok he needs to now go get a few different black people and see if what HP is saying is correct in that it has difficulty "seeing" contrast. Wonder if it picks up seeing really really really tan orange people.
"as soon as my blackness enters the frame"...awesome...just awesome. The guy does have a sense of humor about it. HP.....this is a FAIL for usefulness....but also a WIN for humor.
Damnit! I knew being white would come back to bite me one day, now when HP computers rebel and start killing us, I'll be the first to go cause I'm white.
Sometimes the comments on the site get a bit off color and downright bad, but I am impressed that most people seemed to understand the guy was joking, even though it sucks. I think the biggest people we have in the US of A is that people DON"T talk about race enough. It's a taboo thing, that all side are oversensitive about, and with just cause at times.
Bravo guys, some of the comments are down right hilarious, while not being disrespectful or hateful at all. Lighten up America. For some of our fair skinned followers, I recommend this book my Perry tuttle, there is a interview from NPR with highlights.
@grubish1: I just watched the first season of Better Off Ted last week.
That light sensor technology was the first thing that came to mind when I read the article title. Hahaha.
OMG, its an episode of Better Off Ted!! (Racial Sensitivity [1.04])
Ted: The system doesn't see black people?
Veronica: I know. Weird, huh?
Ted: That's more than weird, Veronica. That's basically, well... racist.
Veronica: The company's position is that it's actually the opposite of racist, because it's not targeting black people. It's just ignoring them. They insist the worst people can call it is "indifferent."
Ted: Well, they know it has to be fixed, right? Please... at least say they know that.
Veronica: Of course they do, and they're working on it. In the meantime they'd like everyone to celebrate the fact that it sees Hispanics, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Jews.
@MissNormaDesmond: Yes!! I never heard of it until now. And now I'm intrigued. Though when I read it, I heard the voices in the video and it seemed even more hilarious.
@MissNormaDesmond:
The five most recent episodes are available on Hulu. I just watched my first two the other night, neither were the one quoted, but the show was definitely funny enough to add to my queue.
As a minority myself who half-grew up in the US and half-grew up in El Salvador, I find it amusing that other minorities are so sensitive. It's like they have inferiority complexes. "There I said it, minorities in the US have inferiority complexes." When you travel abroad to other countries, no one is so sensitive...
Jesus, what a douchebag idiot. He sounds like the black guy with the chip on his shoulder from The Animal. It's probably just a glitch or bad lighting. I highly doubt the software guys at HP designed it to specifically ignore black people.
@kabuk1: I guess black people are just kind of sensitive to being ignored by system or program because of the color of their skin for some crazy reason...
The system clearly works, for white people. So what's the big deal, right?
@kabuk1: lmao. It's funny how stupid you are......imbecile. I mean, if he had blogged on his opinion and you received his message only as text, I'd understand your opinion and would likely agree with it. But to witness his body language, mannerisms, tonality, voice inflections, and facial expressions and still NOT get that he was being sarcastic (a fact that even the white woman beside him CLEARLY understood)? Fail.
@kabuk1: You are a jerk. He was kidding, clearly. He does not sound like "the black guy with a chip on his shooulder". He sounds like someone making a frigging joke.
And of course HP did not design it to continue the white mans oppression of the brothers...
@kabuk1: I'm sorry to say, but it is you that is showing yourself to be a douchebag and racially ignorant. You quoted the man as saying "computahs" when he clearly said "computers" the proper way.
@Jordan Montanez: Not really. They're just noticing the guy's an idiot. You know, like you look out the car window when driving cross country and go, "oh, look, a cow". They were driving through the Internet and noticed a moron. Happens pretty frequently.
@kabuk1: Besides all the comments defending this man for his clearly jokish tone, he said Hewlett Packard COMPUTERS are racist, he didn't say the company was racist. Accusing a computer of racism is pretty hilarious comedy in my book.
@TheSonOfKrypton: Heheheh. Rockin'!! Thanks for that and for making me laugh.
I worked with a bunch of pretty neat dudes at a local internet provider. One of them was black and he was such a laid back cool dude. I really admired him for being such a nice guy in what was a rather stressful job at times. He made it easier to be calm about some of wackos we'd get calling in. There just aren't that many black people out in southern New Mexico. Sure, there are some, I just didn't get to cross paths with many. I had a friend in Tulsa, OK that was neat and his mom and dad were super-nice. I loved going over there and hanging with his family when I would go back to Tulsa to visit my folks. They were sort of an extended family of mine.
Sure, these things don't have anything to do with them being black, just glad to have known them and I've always sort of known that skin didn't really matter. Apparently to HP cameras it does matter though. I really bet all that happened is that they just simply forgot to test the device with various skin pigmentation.

At least the guy was being a good sport about it though. It would be a different story if he was suing them for 3M in "damages".

Back to coding HP!..
I wonder if Logitech web cams have the same problem, since the DO face tracking.
12/21/09
12/21/09
1) hp's facial tracking software is bad at contrast in low light conditions
2) a LOT of people here watch some show called "Better off Ted"
2a) the same people don't look at any previous comments.

Maybe I really don't understand black people and when I think they are amused they are really angry as hell and not going to take it any more.
Nah, I don't think so.
