@RenegadeIrishman_IsFullOfStars: No, all you have is probably the most advanced of all the cell phone OS's underneath (true multitasking, native copy/paste from day one, etc.), but which is behind in the interface department. So, you take TouchFlo3D, which is an improved interface, and put it on top of Windows Mobile, which is the most advanced underlying OS, and voila. You now have a phone more powerful than the iPhone that also looks and works as good or better (in most ways). Not even the iPhone has a 3D interface.
@badasscat: you cant just slap an interface on an OS without it being coded for it or It results in poor performance and integration. I'm not a Microsoft hater in any way I just think their phone OS is way outdated. I didn't mean to imply that they were incapable, merely that they were late. I used humor though, so as to entertain the masses.
I think people need to understand Microsoft's strategy when it comes to WinMo (and a lot of its business). Microsoft has said that it believes more in expanding the user base instead of just converting existing users. Hence, it aims heavily at emerging markets like India, China, as well as Europe.
A similar strategy was employed during 2002-3. Apple was running the "Switch" campaign which got a lot of press but, after a year, it was discontinued after Apple lost marketshare. This wasn't because Apple sales were down; more people were buying PCs than Macintosh computers during that time (an argument can be made that at this time Microsoft and Apple were to some degree in competition in pre-Boot Camp days). Apple was trying to convert (PC) users instead of creating new users.
We're not going to see a lot of phones here because this isn't where the fight is. It's in China and India.
just bought a tilt online because of this. couldn't wait any longer for the touch pro and i got it for less than $200 without a contract. if touchflo and all that doesn't do it for me, i can always just get the touch pro but i figured this would help me tide it over.
I've been running DCD's 3.2.6 rom on my Mogul for months now with very few problems. In fact, my phone has been running so smoothly that I have decided to hold off on upgrading to the Touch Pro.
PS PPCGeeks.com is another great rom community, even if they mainly focus on CDMA devices.
I know I've mentioned the great work the guys over at xda have been doing a few times on this site so it's great to see you guys recognize them too. Kudos.
@Selcouth14: Add 28 for the answer: Yeah, I figured that Giz would have known about (and been occasionally hyping) XDA off and on for several years by now.
I think this is only like the second article I recall seeing that mentioned anything about xda...
Android 1.0 is up and running on the CDMA Touch (Sprint Touch, Verizon XV6900, etc). Stability isn't perfect but the only major things that don't work are android market, gps and the camera. It seems to have more issues depending on which radio you're using. I'm running 3.42.50 from the official Bell rom and its been working fine all day. You can download it from the vogue forum at xda-developers (when it comes back up) and try it out without flashing (it uses a bootloader to load itself into ram so that when you reboot it it just boots windows from the rom again.)
Funny, I just revived my unused T-mobile Dash with the 6.1 ROM yesterday, but I don't really feel like moving my SIM out of my G1 to play with the Dash still.
